I need to buy my husband a flashlight for his birthday. He has been complaing lately that the one he has isn't bright enough. He is a night-shift diesel mechanic and is always outside fixing things in the dark. I would like one that has AA or AAA batteries since he gets them free at work. It needs to be bright, that is the biggest thing. There is a million lights out there and I don't know which one is really bright or just claiming to be bright. Since I know nothing about this I was hoping to find someone with some experience. I hate to spend $ 50 on a piece of junk. I am looking to spend no more than $75. Thank you.

Howdy southernstar1976 and welcome to CPF,
Yep, lots of choices out there. I'll give you two suggestions just to get the ball rolling:
https://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_56&products_id=195

The Fenix L2D CE is a GREAT light. It uses 2 AA batteries and has 4 light levels to choose from. Very bright if needed, but also with lower levels for closeup, and it's super easy to use..... just click on and off. Also, it's very rugged.

The store I linked to (4sevens.com) is a great place to do business with. They offer a 30 day money back warranty..... if you don't like it...... send it back in like-new condition (after getting an RMA) and you will get a refund. He also offers a lifetime warranty on Fenix lights!

AND if you use the code PRIORITY25 during the checkout process (before Christmas) you will get 25% off that particular light..... so about $38 shipped!

Ok, my other suggestion, and this may seem off the wall, but it's worth your consideration. A headlamp:

Either of these (one uses 3 AAA batteries and the other uses 4 AA batteries):
http://www.brightguy.com/products/Princeton_Tec_EOS_LED_Headlamp_EOSR.php

http://www.brightguy.com/products/Princeton_Tec_APEX.php

The great thing about a headlamp is that it leaves both hands free for working on things. The 4 AA battery version will be heavier, but both brighter and with longer runtime, but the 3 AAA one will be much lighter.

Actually, you might consider the less expensive EOS headlamp AND the L2D CE....... and get the best of both worlds!

Or...... this nice single level light, which is also bright, and with 25% off comes out to $28.50 shipped (remember that discount is only good for a few select lights):

It usually takes two hands to be an effective mechanic, so consider getting him a headlamp such as the Zebralight H50:
https://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?cPath=89&products_id=434

It casts a 120 degree wide beam so it's nice and floody to light up the whole area he's working on, and the light itself can be removed from the headband if he needs it to peek into dark corners where his head won't fit.

My 02.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been working all day. It was in an e-mail I received. Also, I see I missed the part where it says you need to spend at least $50 to get the discount.... my bad..... but it's still a pretty good deal if you need some lights.

Here it is:

Get the Nitecore D20 at 4/7, it's very solid, and very bright.
The UI might be to annoying for a non flashaholic, especially with the problems experienced by some members here.

I have both. Infinitely variable output and gorgeous styling is about the only thing similar of the two.

NiteCore D20: Long and skinny, indoor use, floody, greenish-blue emitter, 2AA batteries only, hi tech but fussy switching, doubles as twisty. Fun for playing but can be annoying for work.

Jetbeam III M: Shorter and slightly wider, outdoor use, throws, cool white or neutral tint option, reflector options, titanium option, easy forward clicky, SOS and strobe accessable but not in your way.

:welcome:This is definitely the place to ask this question that's for sure! Whatever suggestion you go with, your husband will be very happy...heck, if I asked my wife for a flashlight, she would probably get me one of those old school $5 plastic body flashlights:laughing:!!

Take a look through this review for a comparison of the best 2AA lights on the market. I'd recommend you get the Eagletac P10A2. As for reasons why:

- Brightest 2AA light with a wide smooth beam pattern that's nice for up close use.
- Doesn't use PWM so no annoying strobe effect when looking at spinning fans or other rotating objects.
- Has an anti-roll design body and a clip so it won't roll away if you set it down somewhere.
- Simple 2 mode light that switches levels by rotating the head. Means you always know which level the light will come on and don't have any silly strobe/SOS modes to deal with. Also means you don't have to spend time clicking and waiting for the light to cycle to the appropriate level.

You can get it from here using coupon code 'CPF8' for an additional 8% discount.
