Went out to MO this weekend to visit with my brother. He's into the tactical / outdoorsy stuff, so I recommended the nice LED light I got at Target a while back (Life Gear 1xAA 80 Lm with Cree LED). He loves it; blows his Maglite away!

He asked me for a recommendation for his "perfect" light. Since I'm not an expert, I thought I'd pass along the request to those who are. From his email to me:

My issue with flashlights is with long-term storage. I throw them in the
car, pocket, or backpack when I travel and inevitably if I have a button
operated light, it gets pushed and I have a dead battery when I need the
light the most. So, my ideal flashlight would have a lock-on/lock-off
momentary switch.

I like the non-focusing lamps as well as they are less inclined to
unscrewing off.

Certainly waterproof to 10+ feet is a nice feature. I don't think that
more than 10 feet is necessary as this isn't a dive light and I'm not
going after it if it falls into 100m of water. I have to cross
streams/rivers/ponds/lakes and get exposed to rain and I want to feel
confident that my lamp will work under those conditions.

Recommendations from those more knowledgeable much appreciated.

easy, as ANY of the better lights can do that - without problems.

Fenix LD20, or TK20, with Eneloop Ni-Mhs,
or with Lithium AAs, if You can find some (when not used often, these were real "somewhen in the future" emergency batteries)

Well, if your brother is looking for an extremely sturdy 1AA EDC light with a lock-out tailcap, I'm recommending the Nitecore Defender Infinity.

If he would like something a little bigger than what he has, the Fenix TK20 would be perfect. Especially for use in the outdoors, the TK20 is an excellent flashlight, because it has a warm tinted LED.

If he wants a small ultra reliable long running backup, the Fenix E01 is a great choice

These three lights are my three sturdiest lights by far. As Yellow already pointed out, LSD NiMH cells for frequent use, energiser ultimate cells lithium for long term storage.

Understanding your "guidlines" is cr123A light out of the question? The nitecore extreme r2 light is IMO the best single cell light out there and worth a look.
