I, like many on this forum, own a massive amount of flashlights. If I were asked how many, I would not even be able to give a precise number, but I would estimate the number at between 60-80. They span the price range between a couple of dollars to several hundred, incan to HID, or hybrids. Yet, despite the variety, cost, and type of lights I have, a no BS evaluation of what "really" gets used, everyday, is revealing. I have a family of five, and this is what we actually use.
1) 3-D Maglite. This is the #1 light used in our house. Everyone knows how to use it, it provides flood to spot adjustment, cheap, tough, easy batts to have or find, and not to big or small.
2) The 2nd most used light is a Streamlight polystinger. This light is 12 years old and has gone thru numerous battery packs. It is small in size, can be held in your mouth, sits in it charge cradle, and offers a decent light and run-time.
3) The third light is a Streamlight Litebox. This was given to us 10 years ago as a Christmas present. The one we have is the single output level. This is a monster, reach out-there light. We have used this during hurricanes, searching for lost animals, and it has worked great for quelling a couple of neighborhood disturbances. We wish that it was the dual output model, but it was given to us.
4) Number four is the Surefire 6Z. The reason for the Z is that we find it easier to hold over a straight 6. This is especially true for children.
5) The newest addition to this is a Surefire A2. I do not believe I need to give any explanation on this one.
