What are your everyday, workhorse lights?

I, like many on this forum, own a massive amount of flashlights. If I were asked how many, I would not even be able to give a precise number, but I would estimate the number at between 60-80. They span the price range between a couple of dollars to several hundred, incan to HID, or hybrids. Yet, despite the variety, cost, and type of lights I have, a no BS evaluation of what "really" gets used, everyday, is revealing. I have a family of five, and this is what we actually use.

1) 3-D Maglite. This is the #1 light used in our house. Everyone knows how to use it, it provides flood to spot adjustment, cheap, tough, easy batts to have or find, and not to big or small.

2) The 2nd most used light is a Streamlight polystinger. This light is 12 years old and has gone thru numerous battery packs. It is small in size, can be held in your mouth, sits in it charge cradle, and offers a decent light and run-time.

3) The third light is a Streamlight Litebox. This was given to us 10 years ago as a Christmas present. The one we have is the single output level. This is a monster, reach out-there light. We have used this during hurricanes, searching for lost animals, and it has worked great for quelling a couple of neighborhood disturbances. We wish that it was the dual output model, but it was given to us.

4) Number four is the Surefire 6Z. The reason for the Z is that we find it easier to hold over a straight 6. This is especially true for children.

5) The newest addition to this is a Surefire A2. I do not believe I need to give any explanation on this one.

What do you and your family use?

1) Quark AA warm/neutral
2) Zebralight h50b warm-white
3) EDIT: Almost forgot completely the fenix E01 on my key chain...

#1 used to be fenix LD10 / LD20, but my LD10 is on a long-term loan to a distant friend and LD20 now resides in the car. A neutral quark AA^2 is on the way, I'm expecting that will increase the number of used lights from 3 to 4...

My mag 3D does not see any use at all. I'm playing with a neutral/warm aspherics setup, let's see how that works out. I doubt it will ever be anything but a toy... but let's see how things work out.

Around the house:
Zebralight H501, a great tail standing area flood light. When I am doing my DIY projects I wear the headlamp and it really helps me see what I am doing.
Surefire 6P, 18650 bored - DX:MCE. 150L of cool/long running smooth flood. I have a stainless bezel in coming from another member:twothumbs.

EDC:
ITP-A3-EOS, a great keychain light thats bright enough to use off the keyrings.
Romisen RC-N3-Q5, durable, cheap, reliable, BRIGHT, small enough to EDC in my belt pack.
Eagletac P100C2, Really nice pack carry light, simple mode switching about 180L on high and ~45 on low. Smooth beam and cool running. Flat regulation off a 17670, with no loss in brightness from 2x16340.

I have other DX-DIY lights and a SF-M2 that I rotate in and out depending on my mood.

I don't have many lights (yet), but from what I do have....

1. Fenix L2D Q5 - Light, bright, efficient, easy to use UI
2. Tank007 TK-701 - AAA light, slim for easy pocket carry in any clothing but still a solid perhaps 50 lumens of light

...those are what I use the most. I carry them almost all the time.

500+ light choices... which actually get used? Your input?

-----

Fenix Lego (Civictor head/L1P body/L1T v2.0 tactical switch) next to my pillow.
Elektrolumens 3C P7 by my desk.

My EDCs hardly gets used. They are for emergencies away from home.

I still have loaded lights all over (bathroom, kitchen etc.) but I have not really used them since I installed a 2W Cree LED household bulb in the hallway running 24/7.

My every day use lights are all rechargeable and have changed a little this last while since I got more torches.

My LD10 with 2100mAh LSD's see's most use at the moment, the 9 lumen low (a little green but hey) is perfect for locking up the house at night, going to the toilet etc.
To check the dogs and other tasks I use the RC-N3 (2XAA) or 6P with DCR123 rechargeable. This looks like a 17500 with booster circuit built in.

For emergency standby I have a Glock torch on a G23 and a Surefire 6PDL with a Lumens Factory LED, a G2 with P60L in the drawer.

For daily carry at work I use the Streamlight Microstream and sometimes the LD10.

- Maglite Minimag 2AA with Terralux luxeon I green led (shower light)
- Led Lenser Micro Lenser (red led on one BR435 cell) (at theatres, and other dark places where dicreteness is mandatory)
- Fenix L2D (rebel 100 led) (basic EDC)
- Inova Bolt 2AAA (or a Maglite Minimag 2AAA with terralux TLE-20) when 2AA lights are too bulky.
- ARC AAA (turquoise or blue led) (basic EDC)
- Maglite 2C (either with a Niteize 1W dropin or one with a Malkoff P4 kit)

But I also regulary use a Lumapower D-Mini and a Tiablo A9...

At work I carry a SF 6PL and a Gerber Recon M,
A G2 lives in the car,
A C3 lives on the fusebox,
A TK 40 or aTK 11R2 for walks in the woods or visiting neighbours,
A Lumapower Avenger GX as an EDC,
A Lummi Raw as a bedside jewel,
An Energiser 6 LED headlamp that gets used on red so as not to wake She Who Must Be Obeyed when I go to bed!

An old black and yellow plastic 2C incan that lives on the landing just so I can have a laugh at just how pathetic cheap lights used to be,

And a retired 3D Mag that I'm going to do interesting things to when I get the time!

Well for now, I have only 30 or so flashlights, but only a few of them
are shelf queens due to design flaws or because I bought something new
that fits my needs better.
The rest of my lights don't collect much dust as
I like to vary a lot and use different lights for different purposes.

However, my most used lights for now would be:

EDC:

1. Noname, 7 Euro Keyringlight
2. Streamlight Microstream
3. 4Sevens Quark AA tactical with 14500 battery

If I need serious light:

4. Solarforce L900m
5. Wolf-Eyes Sniper MC-E or Epsilon ED-P17
(if I need serious light in a more compact form)

2. Fenix PD30 (EDC)
3. Eagletac P20C2 (EDC)- in rotation with my PD30
4. Fenix PD20 carried in wife's purse used often

The light I use the most is the Fenix P1D CE on my keyring. There's probably not a day goes by that I don't find myself in a situation where I need to use it.

I like to tinker with watches and I'm constantly dropping small parts in the floor. I keep a AA mini Maglite LED nearby to assist me in any search and recovery missions under my desk.

If I need to go outside in the dark, I usually grab my Fenix TK10 or Eagletac T10C2. Either one provides more than enough light to see what's out there.

If I really need to light up the night, I keep a charged up Thor in the closet.

Here are my top three most used (in order):
1. SureFire A2-YG
2. SureFire E1B
3. SureFire LX2

Although, if I know with certainty that the light will need to be used for an extended period of time (not just quick flashes here or there), I always reach for my SureFire G3 with its P90 running on 2x AW17500 rechargeable li-ions.

In order of highest usage...

  • Dorcy 1W Luxeon Metal gear (3AAA)
  • Jetbeam Jet-III M
  • Maglite P7
  • Streamlight Twintask 2L (Ultrablue 5mm LEDs)
  • Energizer 1W 1AA
  • MTE 5mm Ultrabright red LED "battery vampire"

I still feel guilty using the few Surefires I have so they remain safe (and mint) put away from potential harm (crazy I know) :p

1. Neutral white Quark regular AA w/123^2 tube & 17670
2. Malkoff MD2 w/M60WLF & 18560

I'm eagerly awaiting a Ti Quark tactical 123.

My wife especially loves the MD2 and asked me to get her one for Christmas.
