Ra Clicky.

Or, for simplicity, Malkoff MD2 w/ M61, 2 stage switch and pocket clip.

Or a Quark and a nice dinner for his flashaholic friend!!!

Re: Your best friends has $180 for flashlight/s.

what battery type/s?

general use AAA/AA/D would be only options in my mind.

only primaries or rechargables .. nimh .or ready to learn about li-ions?

general use as in around the house/camping/garage.. not neccessary pocket edc? use distances? close up or walking range or distance? flood or throw? or ALL in different lights?

simple to use? not multi mode? no need for strobes etc? ready to learn to use and if needed program the light? geekynerdygadgeteer or sledgehammer is fine tuning tool?

needs regulated or dimming?

size of hand.. big guy or small lady? twisty or clicky.. see.. i have too many questions to ask before suggesting something seriously.

top of my head:
zebralight h501 (close up work or/and headlamp)
quark mini AA (keychain or small pocket edc)
fenix tk20 (outside for camping or walks.. more of a thrower)
as smaller edc backup iTP eos A3.

*about 170$

option two:
solarforce L2 +L2m diy +dx mce dropin +charger and batteries about
liteflux 2lxt
romisen n3
*about 170 too.

option 3:
ra clicky edc.
mg rx1 mce.
itp a3.

option4:
dx and cheap special..
ledlenser h7 headlamp fake from dx
akoray k106
romisen n3
again itp a3 (i like it alot as a basic simple cheap option)
thats about 90 dollars.. 50% of budget. :)

got plenty other thoughts but got tired typing.. :)

I'd wait until the Fenix TK45 is released and it's CPF reviews have been posted before suggesting anything right now. I think that light may be worth waiting for.

$180 to spend.

- $20 Uniquefire L2 XP-G R5 (1)18650
- $20 Akoray K-109 XR-E Q5 (1)CR123
- $15 Ultrafire 602c XR-E (1)AAA
$55

Spend the remaining $125 on his girlfriend or towards attempts to get a girlfriend and life will be good. :D

For a 1 cell light there's no question, Ra Clicky with High CRI LED.

If it's a 2 cell light the LX2 is good if an F04 is added or an A2L but both would require a trip to Milky's to change the LED to improve the CRI. And then I'm over budget as usual.

If it was to be spend on just lights, then I'd suggest two lights, one for EDC under $60, and one larger for more power with the rest.

+1

The TK40 is the ONLY one out of all my lights that non flashaholics have said they would consider buying themselves (because the output is just so awesome for the $$). But wait, you're saying your best friend just gave a carte blanche recommend me the best light for <= $180? I can't possibly imagine that happening unless they had a special use in mind (LEO, hunter, caver, etc.) Or is this just a hypothetical?

Far side of crazy.
From my direct personal experience.

One Surefire E1B from Battery junction with 24, yes 24 free batteries for 139.00 and also buy the optional Z68 switch for 38.00 from Brightguy to allow for key chain/ lanyard carry. With the extra switch shipping and taxes, this will put you over the 180.00 pricepoint and personally, I feel that the E1B needs the lanyard hole for my purposes.

OR

Two Jetbeam Jet Pro IBS V3's with the warm tint Q3, or drop ONE of the JB's and grab a Peak Matterhorn, Photon Freedom, or Fenix AAA as a supplemental key chain EDC to add to the Jetbeam. I always have a keychain EDC in addition to a larger more powerful pocketcarry EDC. I will say that the newer AAA's have really jumped off of the scale in terms of performance and I am trying to not accumulate as many lights as I have in the past but you can't go wrong with a little redundancy in your EDC system IMHO.

Others that I like but have not yet used would be any of the HDS/RA clickies or twisties. Personally, I am leaning towards the warmer tint leds because I find them to be much more pleasing to the eye.
