I just saw an app at the App store that has an app that leaves the LED light (for flash) on permanently so the iPhone 4 can be used as a LED flashlight with 45 lumens. Question is, how easy is it to replace that 45 lumen LED with something a little more serious so you can use your iPhone as a real flashlight

Even if you change the LED, its the heatsinking (and possibly the PCB trace that carries power to the LED) that's gonna be the limiting factor.

The stock LED flash as it is is already more than capable of providing >45 lumens of light but without good heatsinking, it won't last. :)

I have a few thoughts on this...

The iPhone is very difficult to take apart. I repair computers, laptops, and some phones/MP3 players, and I have to send out iPhones/iPods to a specialist. They are entirely glued together, and require heating and prying to get apart. I wouldn't try unless you have some practice and all of the right tools for the job (and a replacement screen/digitiser for when that cracks).

The iPhone may not have the heat sinking ability to keep the built-in LED cool for long periods of time, as it's intended to be a flash. The app that locks it on may cause damage to it. A brighter LED would usually require more heat sinking, and there's likely not a good way to do it.

45lm is quite enough for a lot of tasks, especially from a back-up light, like a phone would be. If you need more light, there are plenty of lights that will put out more light, for longer time, are very small, and won't eat up your talk time.

If you understand the risks, it would be interesting to see. You'd have to see what kind of LED it has now though, so look for some teardown pics/video, or do it yourself. Then figure out if there is a more efficient version or bin of the LED in the same package. It would be very difficult to adapt a different kind of LED in something so small.

The LED is actually designed to work for extended periods of time...not just for flash.

If you open up the camera app, switch over to video mode, you can turn on the light and it will stay on.

Also I don't think apple would approve of the multitude of apps that could potentially cause a hardware failure.

Why would you want to do that. If you're not carrying an EDC, you don't belong here.:poke:

I agree but each to their own devices. I have a flashlight app which is pretty bright (nowhere near 45lm) but I never regard it as a potential light source. If that was the case I am in a very bad situaton.

seems like a bad idea to me to dismantle a $300 smart phone to get more light then a $30 DX flashlight can give you.

jus sayin :)

Sure I can take on that challenge. It will be quite the modification. Precisely measured strips of adhesive fabric tape will be applied and then attach the light to an iphone. TAADAAA now you get the best of both worlds!!!

I haven't seen anyone do a mod on a cellphone flash so it'll be interesting (at least for me) to see someone actually modify one. :sssh:

It's rare for me to not carry a light or two since I usually carry a bag or a small purse. I find it convenient though that I can use my phone as a light sometimes when it is already on my hand instead of having to reach into my bag to grab a light.

I haven't seen anyone ask about the battery in an iPhone yet. I don't think there are many minutes of runtime at 45 lumens. Just a thought....

I'm pretty sure the XM-L wouldn't fit, physically.

As for the battery, it's a 1420mAh 3.7V LiPo. Plenty of power for 45 lumens.

I can't imagine the Vf of the LED in the iPhone would be too different to a power LED that we'd choose to use. A direct swap would mean no extra current used, but hopefully more lumens.

I think an XP-G R5 swapped in there would be a good bet.

Someone's going to have to sacrifice the camera in their shiny new iPhone for us to find out.

I just got the iphone 4 2 days ago and this thread pops up..the led is pretty impressive for a phone, but it definitely could be brighter ;) wouldn't void my warranty to try it though..i'm just not that rich..

the stock led runs a loooooooonng time on the battery though...

I've used several of the flashlight apps for my Iphone 4, they all work pretty much the same, some flash, strobe, steady on, etc. Most are free, but some are paid. But that LED is pretty bright already.

I replaced two iphone screens (the glass) on an Iphone and an Itouch. I'm here to tell you, this aint no easy job (atleast wasnt for me). Though, i hadnt heard that the I4 opened from the back. Haven't had a chance to crack a new 4 open yet.

It'll be interesting to see how you come out with $300 (on contract) and a $650 (off contract) Iphone. I sure hope you don't brick it. I'd back it up to Itunes first and also back up my SSh's to cydia (if your jb).

Also, AT&T now insures iphones, i'd take some insurance out first before opening it up.

just my 2 cents.
