A friend is looking to get a light, here are his rough requirements:
- under $85
- rechargeable or AA/AAA batteries
- very bright
- something tactical style, with a tail switch
- maybe a couple different modes or brightness levels
- some solid level of water resistance
- no more than 6" long

What brands, models, and sources would you recommend?

Thanks!
Chris

Howdy Chris,
There are a lot of lights that will fit the requirements you've listed. I think the thing that will help you narrow down the possibilities will be the user interface.

Many lights come on in the lowest level first, then go medium, then high. Some come on in high first, and some give you the option of choosing where it comes on.

And of course some of the lights might be more floody, and some more throwy, so keep an eye out for the beam profile as well.

Another item that might warrant consideration would be the tint of the LED..... cool, medium, or warm. Some folks prefer a neutral or warm tint if they are going to be using the light mostly outside, where as a lot folks who do inside work prefer a cooler tinted beam. Do be aware that some LEDs that are listed as Neutral can tend towards the warm side, so it's often a good idea to consult your dealer about the actual tint of the model your interested in.

Which brings up a good point. It's usually a good idea to buy from a dealer with a good reputation here on CPF, as they will often go out of their way to help you get the right light, and will also be there to help you if there is any problem after the purchase.

It sounds to me like you are looking for a 2xAA light. Here are few to get you started:

I don't own any of the those lights, but if you use the Google search box at the top left of most CPF pages (leave it check marked for CPF Only), you will find lots of threads discussing them.

Also, here are some flashlight review sites to help with comparisons:

Most of those lights also have a 1xAA equivalent in case your friend would rather have something smaller. Good luck with the search.
