I know this would push parts to their limits at best, but any thoughts/ results on this setup? Could the battery limit itself to 5 or 6 amps and not go plody for a short amount of time? At 5 amps I have seen the battery voltage drop to close to max vf on the LED, so maybe? Anyone?

Depending on the capacity of the cell its usually recommended not to exceed a 2C discharge rate. I wouldn't use a regular li-ion (lithium cobalt or lithium nickel cobalt) and would recommend using a IMR cell instead.

IMR will only get SSR-90 to 4-5A by DD, NCR has higher internal resistance,
will not get above 4A. Should be fine but check with a meter just in case.
