Here's a clever light from Dollar Tree stores -
so, yes, it is just $1 (no batteries - needs 2x AA).
Turn the light ON and it is a pretty dim soft incandescant yellow-ish light -
Probably low enough not to disturb other people, and not badly disturb one's own dark vision - but about bright enough to walk indoors by -
ie: turning it ON from getting out of bed will not shock one's eyes.
The "clever" bit - is not the cheapo clock - but the fact there is a micro-switch pin that protrudes from the front/lens face of the light that switches it off when the light is placed face/lens down - so with the light switched to ON and the clock light stood on the lens face, the light is OFF, until one picks it up and the light comes ON automatically.
OK, OK, so it's not that "clever" -
but for a buck?
