"U2" refers to the so-called "bin", which means a specific amount of lumens output under whatever conditions that measurement is done. See XM-L2 datasheet for which bins this LED is sorted into. A higher "bin" means an XM-L2 that outputs more light under the same conditions than a lower-binned cousin. Best regard it as an indicator that says how well the production of that LED succeeded.

"XM-L2" is simply that, with bin not specified. So in fact it might be U2 bin as well. Or not.

Also remember that, although brightness bins don't specifically mandate tint, brighter bins are more likely to be cool whites. Lower bins are more likely to be either neutral whites, warm whites, or high CRI emitters. If having a nice tint is important to you, you probably DON'T want the brightest bins.

Is it true that the largest jump in brightness was from XML2 U2 to U3? Well at least i read somewhere before that the jump to U3 was more significant than the jump from XML2 to XML2 U2
