That's exactly my point; If you didn't cover the LED with epoxy, you wouldn't have to deal with scratches. Sure, the epoxy protects the LED, but so did the original design of the flashlight, IMHO.

Nonetheless the flashlight does look cool and the beam is wider...

It seem to be an easier way to achieve the same result of doing this. I totally liked the result---a much more even light, no bluish patches in the beam, and a lot more side spill. It's a great bedside light and reading light. The throw and centre hotspot brightness is less than the stock AAA, though.
