True they are cheap, although dim. Unfortunately they only come in packages of 800pcs.

I made an order from digikey lastnight and on impulse picked up a single 1 watt amber (claims 624nm, which is more red than amber):

$3.48 each, and you can buy just one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Edit: I just looked at the data sheet and it claims 617nm, which is amber /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif, not that it matters to me...

617nm is red-orange.

590nm is amber
