Throw ? - Spill ? - Size & Weight ? - Run Time ? - Battery Type ? ....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

After reading many posts on this forum it seems that most individuals are
looking for one of , some of, or all of the properties above in a every day
carry ( EDC ) flashlight !

Unfortunately, there is no one flashlight that has all of the optimum properties.
It's like trying to selecting the ultimate firearm to carry at all times. If we need
throw, we would select a rifle. If we need spill we would select a shotgun.
However, these weapons are not suited for EDC because of size or weight.
This leaves us with a handgun. A revolver has poor run time, so something
with a large magazine would work better. Most law enforcement officers
today care an EDC weapon such as an semi-automatic pistol with a large
magazine capacity. If they need throw, they would go get a rifle. If they
need spill, they would return to their patrol car and grab their shotgun. The
right weapon for the appropriate application. The semi-automatic handgun
can't meet all the needs for all situations, however it works for most. Its the
same with flashlights. If I need throw, I would grab my SL LiteBox, however,
it is far to large to carry all the time. If I need spill with shorter throw, I would
grab my SL TL 2L 3 watt Luxeon, however, it is a little to large to carry in
my pocket all of the time. Lots of spill could also be provided by or one of my
lanterns. If I need run time, I'm back to the SL LiteBox. If I need a light with
a common easy to get battery, I would grab my SL TL 3AA Luxeon. It to is
a little too long to carry in my pocket. I can't carry all of them all of the time.

After receiving my Surefire L1 I realized that this little light had good throw
and brightness for it's size. The beam is somewhat square with a bright spot in
the center and some spill out to 20 to 30 feet or so, but seems to spread out at
further distances. It has a high and low beam which allows it to meet many of
my needs. The L1 is smaller and lighter that any other light I have and rides
well in my pocket, without having to wear a holster, the attach clip is also very
useful. However, it is larger enough to fit very comfortable in my hand, easy
to actuate and use. It isn't everything, however it covers most of my needs and
is build like a little high quality brick shithouse.

Think long and hard about what your "real needs" are and go for a top quality
light if your have ever day needs that are as important as a good firearm is to a
law enforcement officer when it come to his or another persons life. ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/xyxgun.gif

A great peace of equipment can't satisfy all of the people all of the time, however,
it can satisfy most of the people most of the time.

Re: Throw ? - Spill ? - Size & Weight ? - Run Time

Great post.

For me, the Fire~Fly II with 2 stage switch and S017XA reflector strikes the perfect balance of all those attributes. It's half the size of many other 1xCR123 lights and is small and light enough to be on my keychain, so it's always with me, a true EDC.

Here's how I break it down:

Size & Weight: It's 2.7 inches long by 0.78 inches in diameter. Bust out your ruler to see how small that is, it's tiny.

Run Time: About 1-1.5 hours on high, 8+ hours on low, so you have lots of flexibility. Both levels are very useful.

Battery Type: Must be CR123 in my book, because of battery capacity, low cost, and compatibility with my other flashlights.

Throw/Spill: Very bright! With the S017XA reflector, you get a nice wide and useable spill with an intense hotspot and great throw, similar to any other light using a 17mm reflector.

Moddability/Flexibility: Since it uses sandwich modules, you can upgrade the LED and converter board as technology advances, so it will never go obselete. Can't wait to upgrade once the new LEDs come out. You can also change the runtime/throw/spill by choosing your own converter and optic. And you can change the size/weight by going with the aluminum head or CR2 body. It is a very versatile package, but I find that the stock version (plus reflector) suits my needs perfectly. It also has tailstanding capability.

About the only thing I miss with the L1
is that it can't stand on it's end.

The problem really comes in where a lot of the "Requirements" cancel one another. Want runtime? Size will suffer. Want really tiny? It's probably not going to throw.

Nice tie-in with the firearms, too. Good comparison!

It seems that more often than not, a lot of people look for
a light or piece of equipment that has features or power
that they really don't need and end up with something
that doesn't function well in the everyday real world.

Re: Throw ? - Spill ? - Size & Weight ? - Run Time

this is light not gun barrels :)
i can make a light that has all 4 properties, and then some.
just set it up with quad heads, with different optics.
make it small, put in omnipotent rechargable batteries.

why cant they make a single reflector that has a perfect wide AND a perfect tight spot?
