With the help of a good friend, we put the Makai through some more amphibious tests today.

Don, I gotta tell you - your subject matter is outstanding, and you are an AMAZING photographer!! Beautiful photos!

:twothumbs

(Any guesstimate when the "waves of Makai" might start crashing towards the mainland??)

run4jc,

Thanks!

I received a small number of the Makai heads last week. I anticipate a good portion of the order to arrive within the next week or so. As soon as I have a reasonable number of them, I will start building up some 3V, 660 mA versions and open up the offering for them. I would hope that by mid July that those of you wanting one of these will be in the process of getting one.

Oh yeah, Beam

I'd love to be that Makai :D

Looking forward to the first wave!

Hopefully I will be quick enough to catch it! :naughty:

Beautifull pics as always :ironic:

On the first picture, any idea at what depth your friend is ? Looks like a good 5m to me but it's hard to tell

Very cool. When you say "3V", is it safe to assume that the 3.7V variety of RCR batteries would function with no issues? Same basic electronics as the Haiku, yes? And if one wished to have the longer form of the 2x123, but using a 17670 battery to give the extended run time while remaining within the desired voltage, that would be okay, too?

And then for those of us with a "Tim the Toolman" complex (more power, arggh arggh arghh ) "further down the road" we might expect the Buck converter, yes? I did read the post and appreciate that it is still in the vapor stages...just want to confirm that it is still a planned product. Based on what I read the answer is 'yes.'

Finally (thank you for indulging me!), when that converter becomes available and that version goes into production, might it be available as an 'upgrade' or 'replacement engine' for the Makai lights that are already out there being enjoyed?

Thank you for this terrific product. It's not secret how much I enjoy and appreciate the Haiku - this looks like it just might offer a 'next level' of enjoyment from that outstanding product!! :twothumbs

I suspect there are a few of us with E-series cell-tubes that can house 17670s or 18650s.

Belonging in that category myself, I was wondering whether there is a possibility of using a buck-boost driver that supplies a higher current than 660ma? (Maybe the same level as the buck driver on high)

3 forms of fine beauty, your friend has that "Angelina look" , your photo skillz are second to none. Oh yeah.........have I told you lately that I hate you? :nana: j/k

EDIT: You seriously need to consider putting out a McGizmo Calender, it wouldn't even need many months with pics of your flawless land based 2 legged friend or even your lights, 90% could be the amazing shots you get of underwater wildlife and it would sell.

I see you're not content to let me be happy with what I've got.... :p

One step closer to the LunaSol-38!!!! The dream lives on!!!!!! lovecpf

Time to go find something to sell....

Don, what's the weight of the head?

Are these usable with a PD pack?

In conclusion....

Hi guys and thanks!!

I was using a 10-17mm lens for those recent shots so distances look much greater than they are. I would guess that the Makai has been to depths of 25' so far. I won't call any of my lights dive lights as many of you know but I think describing them as amphibious is a realistic approach.

I described the Makai in a 3V 660mA version to try to make the distinction from the yet to be realized Buck version. The actual 3S Buck/Boost converter now being used in the SunDrop and Haiku and soon Makai has a Vin range of ~2.5 - 5 V. So yes, the Makai will be fine on a single Li-Ion or other type rechargeable lithium battery but no low voltage shut off is resident on the converter; use protected cells. The 660 mA level is realistically the ceiling on this converter and unfortunately it can't be set for higher output levels.

The LE for the Makai is pretty straight forward and there is no special attention required in installing or removing it from the Makai head (as there is in the case of the Haiku). Because of this, there is no real concern in swapping out versions of LE's in the Makai beyond paying attention to voltage. I won't rule out offering just the LE's but it clearly is not my focus or plan to push such an offering. It is one thing to respond to a private e-mail from someone who knows what is what and what they are after. It is another thing to add confusion and unnecessary complexity in an offering that is primarily based on complete lights or obviously simple components.

Ian,

Surely you didn't really think it would end :poke:.
The McGizmo line of progression always advances, that way our wallets can be cleaned out and lighter :shakehead.
From the days of the Skunk light, McLux, Aleph's, Haiku's and now the Makai.
What fun :grin2: to see the evolution and muse over where will I get the money from this time or as you said "Time to find something to sell".
Weather it's Atwood's or McGizmo's they are all fun chachka's.
Enjoy!

Jeff

Shown with the clicky packs...

PD - threads are on heads,
Mc-Clicky packs, threads are on body

From memory..., yes I really like PD (with low force springs), but I also like the larger size of 2-pak Mc-Clicky (on mine fits black AW 17670 cells without silver label).
