Any of you guys like Andrew Zimmern's "Bizarre Foods" on the travel channel? I love that show because I can relate to his bizarre taste in foods, however it's sad that alot of the foods showcased on that show I will probably never get to try. I can honestly say that I would probably eat, or at least try, 80% of the stuff that he has eaten. What was most shocking was of all the foods he had eaten up until this point, it was durian, a fruit of all things, that got em.

I remember watching that episide when Andrew Zimmern gagged on the Durian and all I could think was, "YOU WUUS!" I love that stuff!

Being Chinese I really like chicken feet cooked in soy sauce. I've eaten some stuff that I'm not even sure what it was in my few visits to China as well as stuff that my mom had cooked back in my younger years. During my second visit to China my wife's uncle had dog on the menu one night, turtle another, etc. The thing about real Chinese food is that a lot of it is based on years and years of feast and famine in China. When you're starving and need to find something to feed your family or they will die you will try anything. That's how you get some of the more exotic things like bamboo shoots and stuff.

That's where I would draw the line of things I would not eat, dog, cat, and primates (gorillas, monkeys, chimps, etc). Eating monkey would be a little too close to canabilism IMO.

Compared to some of the above, mine are pretty milquetoast, but as I do get reactions from other people....

A peanut butter and sweet pickle-relish sandwich. This came from when my mother used to make wonderful "bread and butter" pickles, and would often serve me some with a sandwich. Then I started putting the pickles IN the sandwich, and after mom's arthritis meant she didn't make homemade pickles anymore - I moved along to commercial sweet relish.

I find it especially odd that some people react with distaste to the fact that I eat Cheerios with peanut butter on a spoon. Taste-wise, it's not much different than making a sandwich with oat bread. This also originates from my mom - who, when I was a tot at the finger food stage had the almost unimaginable patience to make platefuls of tiny "sandwiches" out of two Cheerios and a dab of peanut butter...!

It's my considered opinion that there are very few foods not improved by the addition of one or more of chocolate, butter or raspberries... assuming said food doesn't already contain them. ;)

Bamboo shoots (Menma in Japanese) is THE BEST in Ramen. Not the Cup-o-Noodle stuff, but authentic ramen made fresh in Japan.

I never had it, but Balut from the Philippines is pretty foul. It's duck egg boiled and served just prior to birth. The duck and placenta (I think? I'm not a specialist on duck egg anatomy) are eaten whole. The liquid inside is considered a "broth". I was teaching at this one kid's house and the dad asks me "Have you ever had Balut?" Then the whole family proceeded to eat it right in front of me.

Like I say, there's a time and place for everything... but that certainly WASN'T the time.:shakehead

Makes sense to eat it if I were starving... but if not... ugh. LOL

 I worked as a 'Rent-A-Drunk' [[Day labor-the nickname came aas most there were alkies/stoners, I was simply disabled]] anyway after one-too-any other DL'er came wanting to 'share' my lunch I would carry canned baby octopus jalapenos and deviled ham [[the DH got ate first and quickly]].

I'll pretty much eat anything that walks, flies, crawls or grows in plant form.

Bout the only thing I cannot eat is olives so you folks in the Mediterranean/Greece and Spain are safe tho I'd love to try some of the foods [[local-not restaraunt stuff]] served in any place including Africa/India and so on. Bugs? I eat lobster and crabs so to me they are the same thing. Been wanting to try Vegemite from Down Under. The wife and her ex went and the only thing she did not like was the croc but hey-point one out and I'll drag it in, skin it, eat it and have a nice croc skin jacket. :)

Just no olives please.

The way it was prepared reminded me of Chinese-style beef stew. It didn't bother me too much until I thought about it and the mental game that played out in my head made me stop eating it. My wife's uncle asked my wife if I was a vegetarian after the third dinner in a row where I ate some of the exotic dishes and would then eat everything but that after about 10 minutes.

This is a great thread!

For me, one thing I love to eat that many people would find disgusting is natto. Natto is a Japanese food which is essentially fermented soybeans. It has a slimy texture that doesn't appeal to most people.

I'm suprised their hasn't been more love mentioned for pickled pigs feet. Does anyone like the pickled hot sausages they sell in the convient stores? My brother used to buy the big gallon jars of penrose hot sausages but apparently the factory burned down and their a thing of the past now:( You can still find other brands at places, but none compairs to the original penrose.

Oooo, I like those! When I was in the US, I bought hot pickled sausages at a gas station. Tasted like vinegar and was decently hot, hopefully I'm talking about the same thing you're thinking of.

Small red sausages packed in vinegar? Yep that's them. I have loved them since I was a kid, my dad used to buy my brother and I the biggest jars he could find during christmas and I remember we would both get sick every christmas staying up and eating 2 dozen of them:D You guys don't have them in your stores down under?

Removed link < anybody had this?

Ok, I never ate that, but figured it probably goes here. (but it doesn't -Empath)

Foods I love that some people find disgusting... hmm... I like McDonalds McDoubles. And Ramen. And fried sardines or herrings, I think they were. I need to make more. Fried crisp, eat 'em bones and all. My mom used to make me try stuff from time to time. Didn't like fermented bean curd, nor was I a fan of chicken feet. Don't mind kimchi though...

And I probably wouldn't eat that squid.
Edit: ok, you got me, I don't even like squid :p

Not sure if anyone finds it disgusting, but there is this basil/fried crocodile dish at a local Thai/Laos restaurant that I love. One of the best dishes I've ever eaten.
I also enjoy kangaroo once in a while!

Edit: This thread is making me hungry!!!

The texture of kangaroo isn't bad, it's the gaminess of its flavor that puts me off! I still vividly recall the taste - somewhat like what I would imagine sirloin steak to taste like if someone made a 100x concentration of it. Anyway, all of my friends think I'm weird because I eat canned fish products straight out of the can... Tuna, sardines, jack mack, kipper... I also have a special place in my heart reserved for Spam...

Natto as well as some of the more aromatic cheeses: Limburger, Camembert, raw milk cheese, etc. When I go to a Japanese place and order Natto they look shocked and try to warn me about it.

I believe so! I haven't seen any down here, but then again I haven't gone exclusively looking for them, I will have a gander next time I'm at the supermarket though, but many things are deprived from us down under, such as basic jalepeno peppers which I've been searching for (can only find pickled, no fresh ones).

@Shao, SPAM is freaking awesome!
They sell many types of kangaroo at the supermarket here, the sausages (aka "kanga bangas") are very salty but the marinated BBQ meats are nice, although they are quite tough compared to beef/pork. Probably because they're always bouncing!
