Not the tailgating that I wanted to draw attention to, but the left-laning, though of course tailgating is bad, too, and also contributes to and/or causes traffic. As soon as a tailgater has to come to a complete stop on the highway, everyone behind will have to stop in nearly the same place, with this effect sometimes lingering for hours. If enough drivers anticipate this, leave enough space, and slow to a crawl if necessary to avoid stopping, this will eventually relieve the traffic kink within minutes. This behavior really annoys tailgaters, though, who will pass with too much speed, pull in front, racing to the next bumper, forcing them to stop at the kink like morons, usually making it worse than it was.

I'm typically the guy in the black truck in the right lane going the speed limit while following the 2 vehicles in front also going the speed limit. The train of cars in the left lane are those going 15-20 over the speed limit on a typical morning commute.
