Have you considered something like the yamaha YSP-4000? I posted this with only a link but a photo helps. These are expensive but have less expensive models also.

After sticking strictly to budget speakers dad thought its time to buy a surround sound system so we can listen to music "the way its meant to sound like." :twothumbs

Alright, so heres the deal, dad's been eying Bose sound systems ever since its first appearance as a CD player in Popular Science. Great, but theres a great deal worth of different models out there. :ohgeez:

Any audiophiles here that has owned a particular system and likes it or have advice on buying sound systems please post them here :thanks:

Price is not a limit at the moment, but if you really must have an upper limit then leave it below $1,500;)

so far I've picked out the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series IV (black)
based on reviews from CNet and CircuitCity
but I wanted to make sure I've covered all the available options
I really hope I didn't start anything here Illum, just remember to have fun and you can always buy and sell to upgrade if you want. If the Bose sounds good to you, great! If not as you can see plenty of options. Cheers, Mark

no, you did great actually, all of you did:)
I had more insights come from this thread than what I could possible carve out of those speaker saavy sales representatives. Bose did turn out to have a pretty poor trackrecord :ironic:

:thanks: for bringing it to my attention, let this thread serve as a reference for everyone else whos looking for a new entertainment system.

I've written down all the recommendations here. Sometime after the holiday season I'll try and get to them. Its the "write term paper and write seasons greeting cards" season...little free time except 10-20 minute per day of this week to see CPF:ohgeez:

I agree with those who suggest a sealed base unit. The ported one`s generally sound boomy. The sealed ones will give you a tighter deeper more true base. And as others have said...put your money into the speakers mostly...Dennon makes good affordable amps.

5 of these would run $1000...they claim to offer 360 degree sound that is fantastic for detailed music. This style needs to be placed on speaker stands a few feet away from side and back walls to get the best/proper sound...may not be the best choice if this could not be done as the reflections might cause problems with wave cancelations or holes in the sound field in the listen area...depending on where you sit. Also they would need to be mated with a base unit that would run up into the 120 hertz range (mid/upper base range) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8179428&type=product&id=1185267362842

Here is what they look like naked http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...Q?skuId=8031961&type=product&id=1210289297301

Bass not base. Denon not Dennon. IMHO those speakers would be a poor choice.

Here is a Denon (thanks for the spelling help 9 volt) amp on sale for $300 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8821475&type=product&id=1207352153785

And here are some other 360 degree speakers...larger driver (4.5 inch) should allow for a lower crossover point on the sub/bass unit... same brand and concept as the others...little more money. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9013836&type=product&id=1218008373360

I like buying from CCity, BBuy, Walmart and Target...easy to return and try differant one`s again and again...right now I have 3 differant gps`s in my truck...only one will stay
