Don't listen to these guys too closely, otherwise you may end up with lighting hardware hanging out of every nook and crevase you have.

I have no need for a batton/trunchion thing and find that the ARC AAA fits easily into the back pocket with the wallet, and rests on the bedside table at night.

A short length of cord with a few large knots in it serves to prevent it rolling and can act as a low stand.

For a cheaper option the Infinity AA may suit, but I prefer the brightness of the ARC AAA.

Batteries leaking or going flat are a maintainence issue, I always have a spare on hand, and the soft bright light of a white LED for night adjusted eyes is much better than a globe and lasts longer.

You could go for a Photon type light but the cost of running it if you use it a lot would be too high.

For you other guys, as a caver I do have a small arsenal of lighting, but I'm not so paranoid I need to carry it arround with me all the time.

I have a 2AA Mini Maglite on the nightstand, a 4D Maglite for general household use, and a 3D Maglite in the vehicle.

I know a couple of people who've done it by drawing power from a "switched" power source so that it only charges when the ignition is on. That way, the car battery won't run down if the light is trying to constantly charge.

You can check if your lighter is switched, or if your car is so equipped, check the power receptacle, which may be on a separate switched circuit.

A constant power source, using today's batteries, combined with a "smart" charger, may not run down the battery anyways. See if the specs are available for the charger, and compare them to, say, one of the radios with a constant-on digital display. They may not pull a significantly different current.

I'm sure there must others here who can break it down even further for you.

I keep a cheap rechargerable 1 million candle power spot light, a 3 D cell Mag light, and a 2AA mini-Mag light beside my bed.

I have a Brinkman LX in the car.

Nightstand: 2 lights: Infinity for walking around at night without waking the spouse, Legend LX for things that go "bump" in the night.

Car: 4-D maglight - lots of light, good runtime, nice and heavy in case it needs to be deployed in a defensive situation, only $20 if I need to buy another one.

BTW, my closet is full of 3D maglites and I have a few lithium-motivated AA maglites and a Streamlite 3C propolymer in the garage...

I want to bonk the boogey man and/or check out the roof to see if it's still there in a big blow.

I have a 3C Maglite, but do they make an LED kit for it? Is it worth it?

I know my house well enough that I don't use a light if I don't want to scare away people/critters or look in very dark places (sump, outside in a storm etc.).

It depends on your needs, IMHO. The area you need to illuminate comes into consideration as well, like you stated. Maybe a hotwire Mag would do the trick (?, not familar with these honestly). There are some led drop-ins for your Mag that some here are more knowledgeable about that could give you advice.

Good luck on your search and great Necro-bump:D.

It's worth it if you've absolutely got to have a Maglite, otherwise the money is better spent on a more modern, better engineered light.

Your upgrade options would be the Malkoff if you want a serious duty-light, or the Terralux if you just want a solid around-the-house light.

Wowzers! To quote Australia's opposition leader this has been "dead, buried and cremated" for almost 8 years!

My nightstand light(s), which sit on my bead-head, are a Nitecore SR3 18650, a Quark AA^2, and an A2 Aviator. It's hella overkill, but comforting to have some of my collection close by :)

My house light is an Eveready Dolphin Mk 3, it's older than I am (over 20 years) and still going strong!

There was one that was bumped the other day that was 5 years old, but 8 years... that really has to be a record.

I'm curious how these new folks are finding these really old threads.
Sorry BR, but here is the record necro bump, just two weeks shy of 10 years. :twothumbs

(It's CPF Thread # 2 BTW, another of those CPF mysteries why it's ~2 years older than Thread #1.)
