It was only a few years ago when to get this sort of output a surefire P61 or P91 would burn through 2 and 3 CR123 cells respectively for a 20 min run time.

Now that the tech has come all this way we can get output that is similar or better from 2 plain Alkaline AA cells.

If we went back 10 or 15 years and asked all those cops/first responders etc would they rather use a light that burnt through 2 or 3 expensive CR123's or 2AA both with the same or similar run time I wonder which they choose.

I think 20 mins from 2 AA alkaline cells at that output is awesome. It has been a long time dream of mine to get this performance out of ordinary cells and make my surefire's perfect (for me!!)

+1

to reiterate, as far as I can see, it's the brightest 2xAA lite on the market, period. With lithiums, the runtime should be respectable. You are right for putting it in the proper context.

Ok I am back in CP mode. Has the M31L been released or are they just out of stock and have not been stocked? I dont see a runtime on AA alkaline for them so I assume no one has one.

This looks to be my best bet for what I need. If I can get 3-4 hours out of alkalines or 2-3 for sure at 100+ lumens that is better than anything else out.

Thanks Bill.
So with that ring i should be able to use Surefire E1e with SF LU60A kit with this drop-in correct?

also i'm a little skeptical about lightning objects at 350ft as advertise on Malkoff. That mean it should be brighter than my surefire e2dl (200lumens)?

Thanks

Yes, it will work with the shock issolated heads. The M31 will not be as bright as the E2DL at that distance, even though the M31 has a higher lumen rating.

Any reports on the M31L?

Could someone who has a M31L report on how they like it? I'm ordering one for a Vital Gear FB-1 body. I'm curious what the opinion is on this model. Gene said it would get 2 hours runtime on a CR123. That seems like a nice balance of runtime and ouptut (125 lumen output / 150 foot throw) with that excellent beam.

Thanks,
Dave

When I ran M31 I could not see any difference between it and M61. You know the lumen rating of M61.

M31/M61 will not throw as well as other lites but short to mid distance, they are stunning.
IME, 80% of the time, they are more useful than throwers.

The E2DL puts out a lot of light in a pretty tight circle - you get a small spotlight.

The M31 won't be as bright, but it does give an excellent balance of tight spot and flood, lighting up a larger area.

The M31 excels in close to mid-range detection, in my opinion. The E2DL serves best as a spotter, again in my opinion.

The two lights serve different functions - the M31 would be a good compliment to the E2DL, but you won't replace the E2DL for the M31. Depending, of course, on why you carry the E2DL to begin with.

It's for a carbine. I want to be able to light up things at 100 meter.
Host is e1e and i know i can run e2e body with different drop-in but i would like to keep it as light as possible and as small as possible.

I currently have kuku's e series xp-g drop-in. Do you guys think M31 will be better?

Thanks

Name the lumen ratings for E2DL ...

Name the lumen ratings for Malkoff M31...

M31 is the brightest 2xAA lite I've ever seen, absolutely without a doubt. It's this crazy Turbo mode that has no equal.

Problem (or a benefit depending on how you look at it) is, it dissipates the beam somewhat so what at say 40m, a light with fewer lumens but tighter beam will light up a small area brighter in any particular square inch, even if M31 throws more lumens in total.

I tried it in the woods and it's truly a wall of lite beyond 25m.

I am a happy owner of an M31 + AA twisty body/head. It's a rather amazing light and quite a bit brighter than I expected it to be. So bright that I'd like to be able to run it at a much lower output a majority of the time. Anyone know of how to modify the AA-twisty body to make it a two stage light?

Bump: anyone got the M31L and have some observations to offer? There is info floating around CPF on the M31 and M31LL, just wondering if anyone has first-hand experiences with this module. It looks like it is good for maybe a couple hours of regulated runtime on alkalines....

I've recently put together a 2xAA VME Malkoff Twisty with an M31W drop-in and with 2 Eneloops the output is very bright: OTF lumens in the 220 range and the color quite superb: On the warm sids of neutral with the most attractive peachy blush I have yet seen.

This really is a useful setup with very little to go wrong, and that color...WOW! :)

Thank you, Gene.

Well, since my long (& detailed) post I made late last year was lost, I figured I'd repost my Malkoff M31W emergency car kit:

M31Setupwtext.jpg

12+ hours of full-bore runtime utilizing both AA and CR123 fuel sources. I did pretty well at keeping the overall cost down, this entire setup was ~$190, not bad IMO. And there is the option of the ubiquitous AA alkaline for further use of this setup away from home.
