2C Maglite with 3-6C cell Malkoff drop-in?

If I have a Maglite 2C modded to run 3x123s, could I use a 3-6C cell Malkoff drop-in in it? I know the Malkoff 2C drop-in will not work because the 123 will have too much power, but I think the voltage would be right if I use the 3-6C cell drop-in.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did try searching before posting...thanks :)

I'd ask Gene Malkoff to be sure.

That said, you'd be just within the nominal voltage of the drop-in with 3 123s and I'd guess you'd be fine. (His website says 9v max, if you don't ask I suggest you at least use a good meter to measure the voltage of the batteries.)

Why not using 2x18650 ?
Safe voltage range.
More run time per each charge.
More free lumens.
Lower cost operation in long term.

I wasn't sure that 2x18650 would work, wouldn't they be too long, or would they fit without having modify the rear spring? If I did go with the 18650s and the 3-6 C Cell drop-in, should I get the 2200mah or 2900mah ones?

Thanks guys!

P.S. I know this is one of the oldest mods out there, but I just discovered it :)

Not to confuse you, but there are at least 10 ways to Run 8.4V set-up in Mag 2C :).

That is not including the newly discovered IMR Sub-C cell 22430. Two can be run in 2C w/o boring tube or tail. http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?248596-FS-IMR-22430-Batteries

10 Ways to run 2xLi-ion in a Mag 2C w/o bore out the tube:

  • 2x18500 protected Li-ion with a DIY PVC battery sleeve
  • 2x18500 un protected Li-ion with a DIY battery sleeve

  • 2x18650 protected Li-ion with download's Mag C Ring Kit
  • 2x18650 AW IMR 18650 with recessed spring mod
  • 2x18650 unprotected li-ion with recessed spring mod
  • 2x DX 25500 C-lion, unprotected version (Not recommended)
  • 2x AW old protected C-lion with an C-lion 10mm cell extender

  • 2x DX 25500 C-lion, protected version with an AW C-lion 10mm cell extender
  • 2x AW old protected C-lion with a FiveMega deep Wide SS Mag C tail Cap

  • 2x DX 25500 C-lion, protected version with a FiveMega deep Wide SS Mag C tail Cap
AW C-lion 10mm cell extender sold here: http://www.lighthound.com/AW-C-Cell-...ght_p_109.html)

Ok, thanks for the info, I guess I will have to do some more research on this one. I think I may want to choose my battery setup/LED once I read a little more.

I guess for now, the cheapest/easiest/fastest way to get more power out of the 2C would be the DIY PVC/Hose, 3x123 and a 6 Cell Magnum Star Xenon???

Okay, I don't know about the OP, but I'll admit I'm confused. The "2X18650 protected Li-ion with download's Mag C Ring Kit" looks like something I would be very interested in, but I can't seem to find it searching for it. And "FMs Deep Wide mag C Tail CAP sold here:" link returns an error. Enlighten me? Thanks

Using Deep 2x18650 M*g-C Tail cap, even pair of protected 18650 cells will fit nicely and proffesionally.
I would go with AW's protected 2900 cells.

FM, thanks for the info and link. I guess to answer my own question, I checked with Gene Malkoff about the 3 x 123 with 3-6 C cell drop-in and he said it would work. As for using primaries, I was just thinking that this light would not get used everyday, so that is why I was leaning towards primaries. Plus all of the threads that I have read show dremelling, etc. to get the rechargables to fit - I guess that changed now that I see some pre-made ones available. :)
