I usually compare flashlights and spotlights by candle power. Can anyone tell me how much cp a 35 watt spot or flashlight produces?

In terms of a handheld 35w HID spotlight, (say the Harbour Freight) which is rated @ 30Million CP. From what some ppl here have told me, its really only around 1 - 1.5million CP.

With that huge reflector the Harbor Freight will likely have the best throw for any production 35W HID. But candlepower is more of a marketing gibberish nowadays than an actual thing to measure flashlights.
The bigger the reflector, the more light is captured and sent forward into the spot.

I was actually looking at the HID flashlights at the auction on SAMS' website. This 1 here:

Adjustable carry strap for comfort and portability
Tough, durable housing

It doesn't say what the CP is.

I just recently got a Power on Board light from E-bay. It's a nice powerful hid for the price. ($70 total). Smaller reflector- so it has good throw...not a lot of spill compared to some. Range - almost 1/2 mile...if it's dark enough.

I just posted some photos on a new thread..titled fun with my hid.

Unfortunately manufacturer stated Candlepower is the WORST way do compare spotlights. Many manufacturer numbers are for the most part completely arbitrary. Costco/Harbor Freights got the 30 MCP rating strictly because Cyclops list the 130 watt Thor at 15 MCP.

This is why I specifically avoided listing any kind of MCP ratings when helping with the box for the AI and when working on the announcement and specs for the N30.

I certainly hope the new owner of Amondotech does not put arbitrary and meaningless MCP ratings on lights like the AI and N30 that have gotten good reputations based on real and verified light output and not marketing hype.

If you go back to the thread I referred you to before for photos of the Sam's, N30, and numerous other lights you will see some good information in post number 10 by That Guy. He calclulated more realistic REAL CP amounts based on my lux at 37.5 feet readings for a bunch of lights.

2 - "10 MCP" Thors, 1 - "15 MCP Thor", 1 "3 MCP" Dorcy, and 2 - "30 MCP" Costco HID's were included in this list. You will see just how ridiculously inflated Manufacturer MCP ratings are for these lights.

Has anybody tried the 25 MCP spot light from NorthernTools? The site says it has a 55 min. run time w/ a 12v-4.2Ah sealed battery. Just cuurious as to see if it's worth the $120 they want for it.

Wifeless,

Is this the light you a re referring too?

There is no mention regarding the power of the bulb.
There is also no mention of the color temp of the bulb.
The Battery is only a 4.2 Ah sealed lead acid battery.
The Sam's uses a 7 Ah sealed lead acid battery and gets right about 1 hour of run time.

I would never get a light that does not have detailed specs clearly stated.
