Is 3 aaa's equal to 1C. I have one 3aaa' battery holder from an old crappy led light. and wondering if i go and buy a few more of those lights for the holders would they be the same size as a c battery to go in say a 2 or 3 C cell maglite.

They are a little longer and thinner. Also, they are not suitable for a ROP style mod. Best that can manage is a 5 or 6 cell Mag-num Star bulb, and even then the adapters can get VERY hot in places. Also, it will completely kill the AAA's within a few cycles.

That being said, I have done this mod in an old metal 2C light, squeezed two 3AAA series battery holders in there (very tight fit on this light), add some hose to get the propper thickness so the slide switch would work, and stuck a 5cell Mag-num Star bulb in there. First try and the aluminum foil I added in some of the contacts shorted and almost melted everything. Tuned the design and removed all the foil, and it works ok for short bursts. It's a real sleep now, capable of surprising everyone at this year's Christmas get together. I told my brother to bring his beloved 2D MagLED

So i guess it's not worth it if you want the light to survive.

Well, my situation was win-win either way. My old 2C light was just sitting on a shelf because it looks cool, didn't even have a bulb. Yard sale special for $0.25. I have half a dozen of those 3AAA adapters lying around with no home, and 8 old Duracell Accu 750mAh AAA rechargables. They had less than 5 cycles through them, but are completely overshadowed by my highcap AAA's and hybrids. Had some 5 cell bulb waiting for some 3AA to D adapters to come in the mail, so I decided to have a little fun.

Worst I could have been out are adapters I got for less than $0.20, cells which I don't use, and a bulb if it had blown.

Even if the thing had melted solid (which is almost did on try #1), it still would have looked just as cool sitting on my shelf.

Ya true.

you mean to use 3 AAAs in Place of a C cell?
myself i would avoid doing that at all costs , poor wimpey AAA cells can barely keep up with themselves, a C cell is usually many times more robust. usually i do the exact opposite, try and find any way to get rid of the AAAs and get a battery that works instead.
unless you need more voltage (seires), or just for fun, i would advise against using AAAs in place of any C.

AAA cells suck.
They should only be used when there are important size issues, otherwise AAs are a much better choice.
In your case, I'd go for C-sized LiIon cells (I assume you were originally going for series connections).
