Hi all,
I am wanting to mod my 3D maglite using the direct driven p7 method .

Cable i have. The only thing i couldn't find was the glass lens and heatsink lube, also would you recommend the Battery type and charger or should i go with something else? If i have missed anything Please feel free to add. Cheers.

A D cell is nominally 33600, vs an RCR123A which is 16340.

Thus 3D is nominally 180mm long. Since 4xRCR123A will be too short by about 44mm, you will have to come up with a spacer solution. You will also need a sleeve to hold the RCR123A cells in place since the diameter is 16mm vs 33mm for D cells.

Also, you will have to wire your RCR123A cells in parallel for direct drive operation.

RCR123As also are not recommended at ~3A discharge rate, unless you use something like IMR16340s.

Better battery choice are 3 x Accupower NiMH D cells. No spacers, sleeves, or funny wiring configurations needed. Just slide in and go.

Good wire (Teflon-jacketed) is very useful to have. You also might consider some AA thermal compound, in addition to the adhesive. You would use the thermal compound to coat the heat sink prior to inserting into the Mag tube, to maximize thermal transfer from the sink to the tube. I believe The Sandwich Shoppe and PhotonFanatic both carry AA thermal compound. For a glass lens, see flashlightlens.com or order the 5 pack of lenses from Kaidomain.

The stock smooth Mag reflector might give you an acceptable beam. Best to try it out first. However if you don't like waiting for stuff to arrive, you can order an orange peel reflector from Kaidomain ahead of time. Get the 15mm opening reflector, ProductId=5632, SKU S006166.
