3d Maglite: Battery leaked, help me salvage?

I have a silver 3D Maglite that's about 8 years old or so. My first "real" Maglite. Light was getting weak so I tried to swap out the batteries.

I noticed that the tail cap wouldn't budge. It was stuck on real tight. I had to use a wrench to get it off and then I saw why. The bottom D battery cracked and there was dry white crust everywhere. The flashlight itself was working fine.

I tried to clean off as much as I could. There was crust all over the bottom spring and contact and inside the bottom part of the tube. Top 2/3s of the tube and top contact look clean.

After swapping out the batteries the light doesn't work now, sorta. It won't work if I screw the tailcap in all the way. It will work if I lightly press the bottom spring against the bottom D battery and touch part of the spring against the side of the tube. I'm guessing it's a contact problem?

Anyone have any tips on how I can salvage this light or is it lost? It has some sentimental value so I'd like to get it working again. I've done some searches and found instructions on how to disassemble the light and seen people mention Deoxit.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Scrap the spring, Kaidomain has their replacements for about $5, and they're easier to put on than the stock spring (and offer lower resistance to boot). But yeah, definitely time to polish the contact areas and threads on the tailcap.
