Just took apart my Coleman "1million CP spotlight" again (replaced the 6v 4.5Ah lead acid batt a few years back after a bad overcharge) and noticed the metal reflector contained a 6V 55W H3 bulb. A quick google didn't bring up much selection, so I was curious if anybody was aware of, say, a 100w type of bulb? Of course, this would bring max runtime down to about 15 miminutes, so useable time would be maybe 5-10 :D

But it would be neat to try out... Handheld highbeam headlight!

Try a 10 or 11 cell NiMH pack and use 100W 12V H3's.. you are in for a treat :)

Also, make sure your wiring is up to spec for the high amperages you are dealing with. I have witnessed a catastrophic meltdown where someone's 100W spotlight started glowing an angry orange.. *THROUGH* the plastic. If it was me, I would have hurled the thing as fast as I could into the lake we were standing next to!!

He had the courage to turn it off, wait for it to cool down and inspect the molten guts.

And the bulb may not be that great to begin with: I've disassembled a few of these spotlights, and the wattage ratings on the bulbs are just incredible. I had one "150W" bulb that drew 2 amps at 12V, measured by my DMM inserted in-line into the circuit. Even without the DMM, a Surefire with P91 lamp (200 lumen) made the spotlight look really bad. Obviously far from the "150W".

I later upgraded that spotlight into a really fearsome monster with an Osram 64625HLX which is known to be a real 100W beast of a bulb. Night and day is the word. 3000 bulb lumens made the P91 look like a candle :D

So you may be able to simply change the bulb to a known good bulb from a decent brand like Osram and get instant results.

Hotwires are hot.. play SAFE and have fun!

It sure takes alot of effort to make a powerful spotlight , the large reflector sure makes the throw great .otherwise, for something hassle free, dx has a new ultrafire xenon that looks promising.the bub looks like one of those of a 'spotlight' class and there is the advantage of 18650 cells plus portability.looks promising if its possible to plug in one of those bright xenon 6v h3 bulbs in/ stack up 4 bare rcr123 on a 12v xenon or better, it might already come with a high performance bulb.no reviews yet.

kevin, u must be refering to what happened at mc ritchey reservoir rite :)

I see you still remember..... :)

It was bright while it lasted though!

I would be very careful of sticking 4xR123 into that light - you have to watch your maximum current..

that ultrafire light won't fit H3 bulbs, and there is no way you can run a 55+W bulb on few little li-ion cells.

yes, it's not possible now.well,it might be possible with max~28w(14.4v x 2a) output with a 12v modified h3 bulb( high brightness automotive type) on that ultrafire running with 4 good quality rcr123(~2amp) for under 10 mins.not tested yet though, just offering some possibilities here.

one do need to diy to make it work and how much work depends on the design of that ultrafire light.im favouring it because it has full aluminium construction and hardware which makes it pretty promising, plus its very affordable and decent in built. H3 type is favoured because it bright and it easily available in auto shops.

i used to open up some of those coleman cheap spotlights to mod and was quite amazed by the performance of those stock bulbs despite the poor power supply from those leadacid packs but the plastic housing and thin wirings/switches is big limitation to its potential,it need some big overhaul to make it work that far.

kevinL last saw my last spotlight that caught fire inside one of those plastic spotlights due to poor wirings and over extended use.im using 16nihm aa cells on a h3.

im guessing buck91 would be quite satisfied, for a start, with ~28w high performance h3 type with that ultrafire before he ventures into more monstrous class lights that need way better housing and wirings .its a new ultrafire light but the bulb looks much bigger than the xenon wf500 so hopefully this bulb and reflector unit is as easily replaceble/moddable.all that will depends on a review of this new light.

If you want to really crank up one of them ultrafires... the best way to do it is slap a bi-pin adapter in there so you can run smaller bulbs that are lower voltage, like the 5761 on a pair of unprotected 18650s. It's a solid 35+W bulb.

read thru modocod incan guide....very informative , highly recommended for hotwire beginners especially.

im still struggling to not buy another light, so giving suggestion instead.yeah i really want to crank that uf up, but no i mustnt buy another light.someone buy it and mod it please!
