Okay, so I am clearing out some of my lights, and I am also going away for a week. Being winter in Australia, its nice and dark fairly early. Want something fun to play with, but also bright...

I am already making a list of GOOD lights I want to buy, but they can wait till I get back.

Criteria for choosing:
*Needs to be bright, i.e. no Ra Clicky's or surefires... they are on the list, just not this list.
*No Mods need to be done... take it out of the packaging and go ooooh
*Needs to be "can't put it down" fun
*Can be any battery type
*throw or flood, doesn't matter, but no extremes (i.e. no zebralights or aspherics)

*Preferably under $200 not including postage, but can stretch if its a good user

*Really needs to get to Australia in like... 6 to 7 days at the most.

*Will buy from anywhere, or anyone if it seems like a good idea.

Basically, thinking of something like the VX Ultra etc...

okay... and..... Suggest!

As you said about the Lumapower one...yes go for it.

Lumapower D-mini VX ultra SST-50, or Lumpoawer signature VX SST-50.

both bright, arround 100 dollars and with the ability to take other reflectors, both can take 18650 rechargables and signature VX SST-50 can take 2 RCR 123. I have test them both in about an hour without any problem.

Since i have a lot of flashlights, i can tell you that this VX SST-50 series is just bright.

D-mini VX SST-50 is more tricky UI than the Signature VX SST-50.

I prefer the Signature to tell you the truth, but i use mostly the D-mini VX SST-50.

I know this is confusing and complecated to understand.

Good Luck.

Awesome... thats all the motivation I needed... just ordered then, if the 4-14 days of airmail is more like 4-7 days... then i'm sweet. Hmmm... has to be faster than average, and also depending on the speed of AusPost....

Ordered both the D-mini VX ultra SST-50 and the signature VX SST-50 plus a few other bits and pieces from battery junction, so hopefully here before I leave.

Otherwise, will have some fun stuff to play with when I get back :)

Okay, I leave tomorrow, and the post gets here in about 20 minutes...

Place your bets... did the package with my shiny new light arrive on time?

Excellent choices! I'm betting from your lack of follow-up post that they did arrive on time, and you're busy hunting walls at the moment :)

By the way, one of the best things about the D-mini VX series is the legoability. Did you accessorize?

  • Battery Tubes
    • 16340
    • 18500 (coming soon with remote switch)
    • 18650
  • LED Engines
    • Stock VX-series: Cree XR-E R2 WD (cool, best for throw)
    • Stock VX-series: Cree XR-E Q3 5A (warm)
    • VX Ultra: SST-50 (ridiculous flood)
    • Future: Cree XP-G R5 (TBA)
  • Reflectors
    • Stock OP
    • Teleforce SMO (not compatible with SST-50)
    • Turbo Force
I love the stock VX Ultra configuration - but I can't wait to try the R2 / Turbo Force combo. The throw is obscene for something so small!

I do am looking to purchase a light too. My very first high-powered LED. SOOO many choices.:sick2:
I have been considering an xp-g of some sort, then I discovered the olight M21, but thought it to be way floody for my tastes. I didn't even know about this light. Thank you guys for your great input. I was going post something similar, but I did my research so I wouldn't get in trouble. This would be my first post.

:welcome:

XP-G R5 is a great choice. I recommend grabbing an XR-E R2 light as well, to compare and contrast. Might surprise you what you end up liking!

A Malkoff MD2 turn key black type III anodized body that includes an M61 bulb and Hi/Lo switch. 260 measured out the front Lumens. Also get the pocket clip tail and tail shroud. Will take 1-18650 or 2-CR123 batteries. $154 U.S. plus shipping. This will be your favorite compact light.

It may not be in the price range you are looking for, but I LOVE my maglite led xl100. Only $40 and it comes with lots of presets (strobe, SOS, dimmer effect, etc.) on a neat user interface where the click button normally is. YOu can adjust the brightness and the speed of the strobe. On "fast" the strobe renders all of my friends angry and confused. I got mine at Home Depot, but I;m sure they are online too. Heck, I'll sell you one for $40 shipped...no original blisterpak. I have several and have given out a few to friends and my parents for their cars.

Just one opinion...

I will to research the Malkoff MD2 a bit more. But I finally ready to buy but am being overwhelmed by choices. Here is the list from how I plan to purchase.

1. Olight M31- for night hiking, the weight and the power sold me

2. Lumapower VX ultra- for running, recently got sold on light through this thread

I have flipped around with choices for really, like 2 years, now that I can finally buy one, and not feel guilty (guilty a.k.a. wifey), I am just confounded.

Please feel free to confound and/or confuse me with any input you want to throw out.

The Lumapower replaced the 4Sevens Maelstrom G5. The only thing I didn't like was that it couldn't use the flat-top 18650's. Any body know if this might be remedied in a new run?

The Lumapower D-Mini VX (standard or Ultra) works fine with flat-top 18650s. The extender tube (D-65v) includes a little spring that gets installed under the light engine, so you end up with springs on both sides.

If you mean the Lumapower Signature VX, I'm not sure.
