Ok I confess & admit that I'm one of those PITAs that bug Don every now & then with something I want/need /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Hey but having two right hands & limited knowledge about even basic EE stuff, who else better to turn to but The DonMeister, McGizmo the Wizard of Lights for anything McLux-related right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif And he just keeps coming up with all these wonderful mods & add-ons that we all must have & the things that he came out with eons ago still rock so much that people still are amazed & crave them, can you blame them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

But I do see where he's coming from on all the tons of 'fan' mail he gets & I am always never pushy or demanding & I would fully understand if he were to turn down any request I had without any reason, although I would be devastatingly disappointed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

As I read this thread, I thought back over one aspect of the problem, that of the limited run manufacturer. This is really the category that McGizmo and Mr Bulk fall into. They take a good idea and make up fifty or a hundred or three hundred and sell them to the first people to speak up.

I've done a few mods, and I get occasional requests to duplicate some of them for a price. Most of the time the answer was "no", so messages were brief. Very seldom has it been a problem, except when I was making and sellling a specific part. Then it was more like a business, and I had to treat it that way.

I frequently thought about contacting the Sandwich Shoppe to see if I could let him do the marketing and fulfillment. That would have created more free time for me. Maybe that's the model that should be followed for these limited runs. If Charle had forwarded all VIP queries to the Sandwich Shoppe, he would have been able to simply ship his prodcut to Wayne, and let Wayne's excellent support staff act as a buffer.

The average modder who only shares information but does not sell his creations does not run into the same problems. When I post about a mod I frequently include instructions so others can do it too and I get a handfull of messages.

I'd like to see two mods to CPF;

1) As suggested, a newbies forum with read-only threads about aspects the more experienced folk think appropriate.

2) An "author only" section for announcements where someone like Don or Charlie can post progress on a project without the thread bloat that comes from me-too's and "paypal sent".

That's my 2 cents U.S.

The directory and a sticky regarding the care and feeding of our modders might be very helpful.

Our modders are a wonderful resource. Whatever I can do that helps them continue to enjoy modding, designing and sharing their ideas...as well as selling some of them, I will happily do.

Awareness, popularity and incessant demand will just increase, I think.

I am a relatively newbie to this board. The first time I was on board, I was trying to ask a few stupid questions. I think it would do the board good and reduce the traffic if we can put up an NEWBIE-INFO board; Read only to us mortals. We do already have a REVIEW SECTION where comparatives have been made /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would suggest that we include FAQ on the better-known brands, configurations, etc.

Thus-- Don and Charlie would be making less effort on answering repeatitive product-related queries and more on lathe and modding times, and sales and aftersales support chores /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

with the growth of CPF all this becomes more of a business and less a personal matter among brothers and sisters. this is sad but inevitable with the progress that is made.
some time ago ago there was no problem at all dealing with our modders on a private level, this is almost gone now as this thread so eloquently describes.
some time ago we did not have access to lights like the VIP or McLux either, so there's a downside to everything;
