Ok guys im completely new to custom lights and not very technically inclined and have plenty of questions so bear with me a bit.

Ok so after reading and trying my best to understand the faq, I have come up with the following combination for myself:

Aleph 1 head, LuxIII driven at 1000mA by a SDC driver, 2X123 tube and of course a McE2S tailswitch (resistor value not important at this point in time).

so my basic questions:

1) first and most obvious question: will this combi work?

2) what kind of runtime will this system get? ideally i would love it to have at least 50min at full regulation. am i being unrealistic?

3) will the aleph head and switch work with a longbow mini body?

4) any rechargable solution with this combi? according to the faq the SDC driver can operate between 3.7-6.3V. I know that pilas are rated at 3.7V, so can they work? and with which body? and if pilas arent the way to go that what other alternatives are there?

5) how would the light compare to a SF U2? with particular interest in throw

6) i havent seen much about the SDC driver, only the various BB and MM drivers, why?

7) is it possible tp choose the bin of the led that you want?

8) ok a bit of a silly question this one; anybody with experience about how water resistant their alephs are?

ok i know a lot of those qns are dumb, but thanks in advanced!!!

Let me se if I can break into the quote with some answers......

You should be able to meet this with a J bin LED. With an H bin (more efficient), I recorded the following: SDC runtime

3) will the aleph head and switch work with a longbow mini body?

No

4) any rechargable solution with this combi? according to the faq the SDC driver can operate between 3.7-6.3V. I know that pilas are rated at 3.7V, so can they work? and with which body? and if pilas arent the way to go that what other alternatives are there?

According to Mike J, the SDC will work with a J bin and Pila and you can use a 168s in a 2x123 tube

5) how would the light compare to a SF U2? with particular interest in throw

Completely different animals but the LuxIII driven at 1 amp with the 27 mm reflector will out throw the U2 noticibly

6) i havent seen much about the SDC driver, only the various BB and MM drivers, why?

These drivers are only available on occasion from Mike. Some of us have one or two on hand but you will need to do some searching possibly

7) is it possible tp choose the bin of the led that you want?

That will depend on who does the build, what they have on hand and if they are open to this

8) ok a bit of a silly question this one; anybody with experience about how water resistant their alephs are?

By design, the Aleph's should have no problem with submersion but I have no idea of ultimate depth and this is all predicated on good O-rings, properly lubed with clean sealing surfaces and no foreign contaminants in the seal areas. I am looking forward to taking a few Alephs underwater over on Maui in a couple months but to date, I have not done any testing beyond a sink.

EDIT: You have titled this thread, U2 killer. Now in terms of throw, it is not difficult for a Lux III with a reasonable reflector and drive level to out throw the 5W LED in the U2. Qualifying that as a U2 killer may be your choice of words or concept but I don't consider this lethal, myself! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

After reading the first post I really wanted to add anything, but Don had everything covered ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

... just one thing: the SDC's upper limit are 2x123 (6V) whereas the DB can go up to 4x123 . This is the price for the slightly better efficiency of the SDC.
