Guys, I need your help /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

I am looking for a high-quality green laserpointer as I want to upgrade from my standard model to something better. Since we now have this forum, I though let*s ask the experts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif !

And yes, I chose the term "pointer" because I want to point at things, especially screens during presentations ...

The laser should fulfill the following requirements:

- green 5mW (class IIIa); but real 5mW and not "<5mW"
- powered by readily available lithium cells ... CR123 or CR2 for example
- should have a momentary-on function, constant-on would be cool but not required in addition to that
- highest possible build quality
- if something like this exists, it should be regulated or have a feedback circuit or however this is called
- a lockout-feature would be nice to have, too
- should be able to sustain indefinitely long burntimes

Basically, I am looking for a high-end legal 5mW greenie that is so solid that even I cannot ruin it.

While reading this forum I came across this "Jasper" from Bigha that seems to come close ... anything better than this or is this the top one? And the Button of the Jasper-Always ... does it offer a momentary function, too?

Thanx!

bernhard

EDIT: Jasper page

The bigha make a 2 models, one with momentary, the other with constant. What is the manufacturer of your current laser?

I would say *atleast* 90% if not more more of the guys in here have leadlights, they are extremely well made with higher quality optics than say the chanchun pointer, which has plastic optics. As for something so solid that you couldn't even break it, thats near impossible.Green lasers are very delicate no matter what.

The new leadlights (the 110 models) have a feedback circuit, but i'm pretty sure that the jasper does too.
Leadlights run extremely well on Energizer E2 lithiums but they are also AAA, and you seem to be after something running on CR123's and jasper runs these.

If you want true 5mW leadlight see either Arnold or Chris, but they have the old 105's, not the 110's. Otherwise, i've heard good things so far about the jaspers. Might be something for craig to review? any one had anything to do with a jasper?

Oh, if you tell arnold you a member of CPF he will up it to a atleast a 10mW, but you want a 5mW so............. probably not relevant.

Mine looks like this including the case:

GPL-case.jpg

No inscription though. Bought it a few years ago on ebay for about $180, it was fabricated in 2000 according to the label.

Can those leadlights use L91 lithium AAs or only AAAs?
Link?

I absolutely need 5mW as the intended use is in rooms with plenty other people ...

Thats a leadlight. They are as low as $59 now. But..... if your over it, maybe go for the jasper. AA batteries wont fit in the leadlight, i'm pretty sure. I've never tried

Maybe if you do go for the jasper, craig can borrow it for a review..........

No it's AAA,

AA batteries are not only fatter than AAAs but they are also longer so even if you could push the AAs in (which you can't), you wouldn't be able to screw the cap back on.

You could probably modify the old leadlight. If it has a pot in it, just turn up the pot and you should have a true 5mW laser.

Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFiend

DaFiend All of the CNI pointers I've bought have used glass lenses. The last one was bought about two years ago. Have they changed to plastic ones.

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFiend

hmmm. All i know is that is one reason arnold stopped selling them.

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFiend

Are The CNI pointers the ones with the tapered tip?
If so they do still have glass lenses, and , believe it or not a better IR filter than the leadlights, but that is their only high point.

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFiend

No, i think you might be talking about the infinitor. the cni pointer looks fairly similar to a leadlight. But, lets keep this thread about recomendations huh? Bernhard, you may be interested in the infinitor, i believe its (or at least i think it was)one of Craigs favourite lasers.

I think this is the link here

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

So ... the only ones with lithium batteries are the Jaspers then?

Does anybody know if the switch of the Jasper-Always can be used in a momentary-on position, too? Like a Z57 SF clicky?

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

I own a Jasper Alwyas and no, it can't work as a momentary switch. That's why they have both the Always and the Now. You have to decide which way you want the switch to work. It would be cool if you could have 2 in 1 though!

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

Is the Z-Bolt BTG-10 model the same as the Jasper-Always? Sure looks like it ... and it's cheaper!
bernhard

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

Actually....... I think you are right!!!! Damn sight more cheaper. I 've looked at both models blown up to a larger scale and the look exactly the same. The other thing that makes me think that its the same pointer is that Z-Bolts is on back order too!!!

Hmmmm. It says on the jasper page [ QUOTE ]
Jasper lasers are manufactured to our exacting standards and are custom built for bigha

[/ QUOTE ]

So....... is that a bit of **** and bull wordsmithing???? I'm starting to think that bigha may just infact buy from Z-Bolt(who buy from someone else...). I find it very hard to belive it may be the other way round considering the pricing......

Unless bigha is really greedy, but i think not.

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

I found the Z-Bolt one shortly after I purchased my Jasper. I emailed Bigha about it and they said it was the same housing, but different laser. He said the laser had the APC thingy (where you can leave it on for hours at a time) and also they gurantee 3.5mW to 5mW. I don't think Z-Bolt gurantees anything over 1 unless you get it modified, and I'm not sure if they modify that model.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bigha has higher margins given that they have a larger operation with more employees, fancier site, etc. But when I bought it it was $119. They must've raised the price.

When I emailed about it the guy mentioned that they didn't like how confusion could come of having the same housing and that they were designing a whole new laser for 2005.

I also bought from Bigha because I live in the same town. I worked on the construction crew for the owner's house a few years ago. It's ginormous. Maybe I should stop by and check them out.

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

Good points, guys /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, thanx very much!
Seems like I will lean towards a Jasper then ...

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

No worries! I do have to ask the question though, why do both companies have them on backorder? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: Advice on lithium-powered green pointer / DaFi

Because it is the same manufacturer that builds both of them with the same housing to different specs? (the good version /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Because in fact, they are the same. (bad version /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif )

Because it is a coincidence. (no one would believe in this version anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif Good scenarios. I'm leaning toward /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif

Why can't you use energizer e2 AAA lithiums? Best Buy and Target have them around here. You might have to shop around but they are probably available somewhere in your area.
