AIR TRAVEL

I'm planning a flight to Washington state, from California for a wedding. Has anybody had any trouble packing a flashlight. I believe it (or they) have to be in the check in luggage,:mecry: no on board carry. Right? What is the best way to pack.
With batteries out? In a zip lock?
Any body have any trouble?
Any body with any air travel experience have any tips, they would be appreciated.
