AltusLumen TRI-L (Free your hand and explore more) review.

This sample was provided free of charge by Agnes CHU. I want to thank Altuslumen for that !

What is it ? A folding mobile phone ? A PDA ?

In fact it's an original flashlight like you never saw one before, not really a torch, like any other flashlight. I prefer to describe it as a folding desk light. Its design is so unique that I hope you'll like it too. Double light in one, you can also use it as a spot light with its 4x 5mm High flux Led (about the same power than an Eternalight Ergomarine, for those who are familiar).

Some others details included are appreciable. Li-ion Rechargeable Battery , USB power cord for use with your laptop or recharge without AC/DC adapter (provided), red/green Led for battery low warning and charge indicator. Internal switch which switch off the area light automatically when you fold the light.

2. First impressions

With the sample I received the carrying pouch was not provided, only the light, the AC power adaptor (EU model) and the USB cable. A protective film was on the plastic lens, which is a good idea to prevent scratch before the first use.

Magnesium body is very nicely finished. The folding mechanism seems very well studied and very solid. The light was immediately operational, certainly because of the low LI ion battery discharge.
In any position, what I really appreciate, is the stability of the tripod, this is astonishing for its light weight !

I will be soon (I hope) an engineer, and the advertisement for this light is especially designed as an engineer flashlight, so it is made for me .
After three days of use and tests I want to let you know what I think about this very revolutionary portable light. But you guess, I am very positive on this one and I really think that it's another thought of portable light.

If you are searching for a torch light for camping or outdoor use, I am not sure you will be satisfied by this product, but, if you are searching for a portable desk light or reading one, it's the product you need to buy !!

And now, it is time to show you the measurements I realized to verify the Manufacturer announcements.

3. Measurements

I tested TRI-L autonomy after three cycles of charging time.
It took 3hours and 9 minutes to charge it with AC adaptor.
Another recharging try, directly connected with an USB port on my PC took exactly the same time !!
Time of starting test : 10h25 AM
Red light started to flash (Low battery warning) : 12h20 PM ( 1h55 min)
Area light started to flash : 12h24 AM (Only 4 min after red flashing instead of 25% remaining)
Area light off : 12h 24
Spot light started to flash : 12h28 (4 minutes, instead of 10 minutes advertised)
Spot light off : 12h28

The regulation of this light is very good but it seems that the low battery red warning is not really as advertised, if the red light is flashing, you'll have no more than 4 minutes remaining autonomy.
And, therefore you couldn't use the spot light for more than 4 minutes before recharging it after that.

Because it is a flood light, I didn't make Lux meter test, nor I did beam shots (maybe soon) .

4. Conclusion

I really like this portable light and I think it is not comparable with any other I have in my collection.

If you need a flood light to read or to work on small parts, like an engineer, this light is made for you. You can put it in your shirt pocket like a mobile phone, it is flat and light weight !!

If you need a flashlight with lot of throw, please choose another one, this light is a portable desk light and not designed for you !!

Pros
Magnesium body
USB rechargeable
Versatility
Optimized regulation
Design and construction
Size and weight

Cons
Plastic lens
Battery not replaceable by user
Not really waterproof.
Only one level. Low, med, and high levels will be a good idea
Reliability of the low battery warning
Price ( MSRP $99.00 )

Well licht is light in German.

This light does seem very interesting and has a magnesium body. Where else have you seen that in a flashlight?

But IMO costs a bit too much.

Thanks for the review!

Nice review!

Slap a solar panel on the back, and add some levels to it and I'd be all over it.

Thanks !

I am not sure that solar panel will do the trick, the problem is the weight of solar panel and maybe the flashlight will not be stable on its tripod...

A TRI-L with 3 levels is in progress, and on low level it could be run about 8 hours with area light (actually about 2 hours)

Thanks for the review, lights like this generally don't get a lot of user feedback. I have been researching this light for a few days. It looks like a good replacement for my Zebralight but I can't seem to find a picture showing comparative thickness.

Would it be possible to see a picture with a common item showing the thickness?

Hmmm...good question...

In some words..

H50 thickness is 18.27 mm
Tri-L thickness is 21.06 mm
H30 thickness is 22.83

All measurements are for maximum thickness

I will take some shoots as soon as rain will stop here ;)
