I got that charger. It came in a package deal when I got my GPSr. I doubt that I would have purchased it by itself, because it's timer-based and it charges batteries in pairs. But for a dumb charger I think it works fairly decent. I use it as my travel charger. Most of the time I use this charger it's on depleted batteries, so the timer thing is not a major deal for me. I don't use this charger a lot, but I have never had batteries hot to the touch... only mildly warm near the end of charge.
A while back I emailed Lenmar to get a little more info that was not in the manual. The only difference in the Ni-Cd and Ni-MH settings is time (3 hours for Ni-Cd and 8 hours for Ni-MH). So for partially depleted Ni-MH cells, the Ni-Cd setting may be the way to go. The other thing is when the main charge times out, it switches to a trickle charge at ~70 mA. This trickle charge rate may only apply to AA cells. I can't say for sure what it may be for AAA or 9V. I have never used it to charge 9V.
