As anyone who is fortunate enough to own one of the 'earlier' Arc-LE's, the best and most important feature (and why I paid $40 for my first one) was the whiter, warmer, and brighter S rank Nichia LED, IMHO. I like the HA finish, but I love the light my Arc-LE puts out. I simply never use my 'regular' Arc-AAA anymore, as my Arc-LE lives on a comfortable nylon cord around my neck 24/7.
And, I'm *really* glad, from the sounds of the V 3.1, that I bought a 'spare' Arc-LE, not expecting to see them available again.
Perhaps the LED's in the V 3.1 are simply not as good as the ones used in earlier runs of the Arc-LE. I'd be interested to see beamshots of a standard Arc-AAA, a V 3.0 Arc-LE, and a V 3.1 Arc-LE
Probably, the V 3.1 Arc-LE's still have a superior color and output LED, compared to the 'regular' Nichia LED's used in the Arc-AAA. I'm guessing, of course.
Arc Flashlight is, as everyone knows, at the mercy of their LED suppliers, as is most obvious in the greenish halo from the more recently produced Luxeon Star LED's.
The newest batch of S-rank Nichia's are likely simply not quite as nice as the earlier ones were. Or perhaps some are simply a little more blue than others.
AS an aside, I ordered an EternaLight Elite X-ray for a fellow overseas when they were first available, and when I checked the light, one LED was very blue, compared to the other three, and the LED's in the Elite Xray I had already purchased.
I sent it back to Technology Associates, and they quickly replaced it, of course. It wasn't obvious until I shined the light at a white wall at a close distance; then it was easy to see. I doubt that individual LED *wasn't* sold as an S rank LED, but it certainly wasn't as nice as the other three.
