I've hunted and searched through more threads than I would like to imagine, but I have to throw in the towel! Quite overwhelmed.

I'll be using my PT Apex (130 lumen) model for hunting tomorrow (red LED's model to not scare bambi). I've read the instruction booklet and many threads on this site, and I am very confused with what batteries I should use.

The temperature will be cold (18 F) so I think I should be looking at Lithium or Lithium Ion. I'm not sure which is best...or frankly the difference.

Should I get re-chargeables? I understand there are dangers to this.

Do I just need to use 2 batteries if I go Lithium Ion?

Is the Apex even able to use Lithium Ion?

I appreciate the help, and the more specific (brand, size, Mah capacity, etc) the better.

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! ...and the welcome.

What's the reasoning behind suggesting the Energizers?

...Just trying to learn.

I agree - - go with the AA Lithium Energizers. Pricey, but they work in extremely cold temps without problems. I think they are usually about $2.50 a piece at Wally World so it will be 10 bucks. I've had to splurge a few times to run my Apex with them as well. They are lighter and work at full power despite cold temps.

If you're near a Sam's Club you can get a 12 pack of them for about $16 which is as cheap as I've ever been able to find them. Somewhere online may be cheaper.

I don't have experience using rechargeables in the Apex so I can't comment on that, but I think you'll have to use 4 batteries regardless of what type you use. Other folks here could comment further on the rechargeables.

If I was going to use my Apex outdoors in 18 F weather, I would use Energizer Lithiums.

If you decide to go rechargeable, the most popular options are the Sanyo Eneloops or the Duracell Pre-Charged. I've tried just about every brand of NiMH AA battery in my Apex, and the Duracells are my favorite (I haven't tried the Eneloops, though).

the Apex is my main headlight when winter camping. indiana winters are hot compared to minnesota winters, but once every 4-6 weeks we get some Minnesota weather too. and that is when i go out camping. and that is when i use energizer lithiums. NEVER had a problem with light or batteries...ever.

why not just use NimH AA rechargeable Enloops?

Tests have shown they are immune to loss of power at that range of cold temps.

Guys,

I really appreciate the replies. Yesterday, I bought an 8 pack of the Energizer Lithiums. Can't wait to use them.

I will eventually purchase the Eneloops based on great performance in the cold and the nice strong burns I'm seeing from the "freezer tests". I'll probably just use the provided charger which should be good for my purposes.

Thank you again.
