I got a Radio Shack digital multimeter, reads up to 2000. That would be either 2.000v max or next setting is 20.00v max. Its a bit of overkill but price was so low I bought it anyway. Has a PC interface, but haven't used it yet. That would be great filling up spreadsheets with readings every few seconds if I desired. Cat no. 22-168A Measures volts, amps, ohms, freq, hFE, capacitors(limited) and a few transistors. I think I paid around $50USD for it long long ago. This model is probably obsolete by now. They may do an autoranging one for that price by now.
If no Radios Shacks near you, find a ham radio operator and ask them. They know all the great local access places to buy stuff.
For 2 digit accuracy there are real cheap ones for less than $5. They show 3 digits but only two are worthwhile. Try dollar store for the junk ones. Or maybe a Sams club or BJ's club. But you might have to buy a dozen for $35. What to do with the other 11 ?
