HID TRIATHLON . . . Let's Get It On !!!

See THIS post for starters:

Ken is donating a PF45 for the "HID Triathlon", let's raise some funds to secure a Beast II
so we can make this happen and hear the announcer shout . . . "Let's Get It On!!!".

Here are some initial thoughts. This will be a group action so anything and everything may
change as the group effort moves forward.

- We as a group raise the funds to secure a Beast II for the Triathlon.

- After the Triathlon, we will have a drawing. Each member to have contributed $100 or
more will have their name in the drawing. The name drawn gets the Beast, that simple.

- Ken may even OK us doing a second drawing, set-up the same way, for the Polarion PF45.

- We will set aside the funds upfront to cover shipping to the winner(s).

- If PK steps up and donates a Beast II for the test, everybody's money will be refunded.

- Ideas for the type of general comparisons we'll do BEFORE the FINAL TORTURE TEST!
Throw
Runtime
Balance and Feel
Overall Beam Quality
Color temp of bulb
Charge time
Overall UI
Quality/attention to detail
Build material comparison
Resistance to dirt/mud/etc.
SW capability (secondary weapon)
Lens durability/scratch resistance
Spark/re-spark times
Submersion
Case design
THE FINAL Torture test
???
???

- Location is TBD

- Date is TBD

What do you guys think?

Your thoughts . . . Can we make this happen???

I think it could be a very interesting project.

It would also make a difference if we knew whether or not Ken would allow the PH-45 to be given to the winner since this fact would double the chances for winning a light. This could have a huge bearing on whether or not the funds could be gathered. Right now we're looking for approximately 40 people with $100 donations....with a 1 in 40 chance. If the Polarion is given away at the end it becomes a 1 in 20 chance to get a light.

I think it would be fair for cpfer's who donate more that $100 to have more than one raffle ticket in the pot. It would be best if it remained in $100 increments though.

My last thought is that it will probably matter to what extreme the lights are tested to. Are they going to be tested to destruction or just a set series of tests that shouldn't cause destruction?

Forget about all what I consider the same Ol' comparison thing.
I can answer almost all the questions listed above already. I have no interest unless somebody simply wants to do an article kinda comparing the "big boys" so to speak.

What I did say, anybody who wants to start throwing around a Beast without the Rubber Bumpers and see how it does against a Polarion, I am in.
If somebody wants to throw a Barn Burner into the game, so much the better.

My guess is that both the Beast and the Polarion will both get catastrophically damaged at about the same time. Who knows until we try?

I also stated that Polarion as currently delivered has a composite tailcap, so that would go first if that gets hit first, no doubt in my mind. I will simply make put our metal tailcap on the Polarion to even the playing field.

I want to put to rest the "indestructibility" of the Beast based on a light/test/demo using shock-absorbing rubber cushions. To me that smacks of a Chris Angel mind freak.

The Beast is a cool HID light, absolutely no doubt about it. But is aircraft grade aluminum (the same stuff we use), glass (the same stuff we use), batteries (different there), lamp (same basic setup), and an electronics module. Having never taken apart a Beast I can't say which electronics package will fair better. I know ours is podded and sealed well.

In my view the tough part will be ensure the same drops are used.
Incremental drops and consistent angles will probably address that issue.

We can also drag them behind trucks, run them over with trucks, drop them from moving vehicles.....Fun stuff....

If I can meet the time line I'd be happy to provide a TANK HID - M1A for the test...

I have 1 new version in stock, spec build in process and prototype in development...

I think the Xeray 50 (DL-50 bulb in Barnburner may not be best choice) would do just fine if not lead the pack...

Cheers!

I guess this never went beyond the intial $100 started by Seery.

It would still be neat to see this happen.:twothumbs
