What is the best led for a throw type light, as bar as tigh beam, lumens per watt? i am using some mc-e with a 41mm orange peel reflector it does ok but i like a tighter. i have some xp-g but what is the best optic for a good tight spot.

Are there better led for this application

You should probably be talking candela or lux, as it's intensity not the total amount of light.

At the same current, the XR-E is best. Its primary optic gives it a narrower beam angle than the XP-E and XP-G (meaning a higher percentage of its light comes out the front) and its die size is smaller than the XP-G (meaning the light comes from a smaller area). Because of the second reason an XP-E R2 beats an XP-G R5.

But that's at the same current. I haven't heard what difference the recently increased current rating on the XP-G will make. Someone will probably check that very soon.

That is what i need, a high lux rating, what optic, reflector or aspherical is best for the application.

I am building a custom light with limited design requirement other than weight and need to keep it under 2 1/2" diameter.

Sorry, when I meant best, I also meant that best results will be with an aspheric lens, which is why the narrower beam angle of the XR-E is so good. Reflectors just don't compete. I suggest you search on CPF for aspheric throwers to get some ideas of the impressive lights that members have made. A 2.5" aspheric lens might be heavier than you want, but smaller lenses still work extremely well.
