Best sources for basic info on building custom modules?

Can someone direct me to the best sources for basic info on building custom modules? How to properly size? Current draw? Switches and modes? Matching batteries to the load? Drivers?

I have a small lathe and milling machine, and I can perform mechanical mods just fine. But I am pretty ignorant when it comes to electronics, so I need to get up to speed.

I'm interested in doing a few mods but have no clue how to choose the right parts.

I think what might help is a mod detailed from start to finish on parts selection and why they were chosen.

Example:
I'd like to mod a T20C2 MKII with an SST-50 but need to keep the drop-in outer shell to avoid custom machining. I have no clue what other parts to buy in order to just make a simple 1 mode regulated SST-50 drop in for it.

I think a simple mod with detailed explanations of parts chosen might help out the visual/thinking learners out there.
