Got a Hotwire good combo here I'd like to share.

3D Mag
Kai 3AA to D
Kai MOP
Bright Effects 6v 15watt unpotted bulb (available at Lowes for $6 each)

Comparing ceiling bounce test against an ROP. I would say it produces about 100 lumens more than the ROP. Definitely brighter and you will notice it.

Yes, but I am running this one at least 9v (9AA NiMH = 12v minus resistance estimate = 9v). I measured 2.8 amps. At 9v * 2.8 amps = 25 watts! 10 more watts than rated.

Nice find. I have not heard of this bulb before. A CPF search only came up with a thread about compact fluorescents.

Here it is at Lowes.

It is a 2000 hour bulb. It looks like a G4 base. It is cheaper than a WA1111. Looks interesting.

I will have to pick one up at my local Lowes. I would like to compare it to the 1111s I have in an M4 and a 2s2p 18650 Mag.

I should probably send one to LuxLuthor for testing too.

Wow, how long have you run the bulb? Any instaflashing yet?

Using Duracell 2650.

Running it with only 6 AA in a 2D Mag was not enough. The light was a poor dim yellow.

I ran it with 12 AA (yes, that's 12!) in a 4D Mag. The batteries were sitting for about 2 weeks since the last charge and were reading about 1.25v each. The SOB bulb really lit up, never seen a light that bright before. WOW! I said to myself, what if ... ?

So went ahead and re-charged the 12 AA to 1.4+ volts and put everything back together. Poof, instaflash ... that's with 12 AA, freshly charged.

I decided to run using 9 AA in a 3D Mag, fully charged and that was the best combo I found so far. No instaflash yet. Running on and off just for fun for a day now.

I wouldn't dare run the light for more than 1 minute. It is HOT. I can feel the Mag body heat up. I can feel the heat coming from the front with my palm about 6 inches in-front.

Nice project, but you'd better make sure to use a good battery adapter. The KD 3AA-1D adapters are good but I read somewhere (can't find it right now) that they are not recommended for current draw above 1A. Maybe you can better get a high-current-approved battery adapter.

Wow, I can't wait to compare this to my 6 eneloop rop high in a 9 eneloop with bi-pin adapter :)

Hmm, dilema, do I go buy it tomorrow, or wait until I get the Visa coupon you also linked to.

Great thread! Thanks.

I know. I am cheap that's why. I am quite happy with the Kai adapters. The other higher quality adapters are just too expensive. I am sure the performance would be better (less resistance) if I get higher quality adapters.

is that an axial bulb?

I have one *potted* axial bulb, 15W 6V that seems to hold pretty well overdrive...

I'd like to bring this thread to the attention of everyone building a cheap Mag HOTWIRE.

I recently dug up my project from over a year ago and it still amazes me how bright it is.

1) 3D Mag

2) Parts from Kaidomain
- 3x 3AA to D adapters
- brass Mag bi-pin adapter
- 52mm with 15mm opening aluminum MOP reflector
- plain glass lens

3) 6v 15w Bright Effects G4 bi-pin bulb from Lowes:
