I bought a Mini Griptillian 555HG a few months back and played with it quite a lot. Finally one of the springs broke. :sigh: It's on its way back to Oregon and will be fixed under warrantee, so no problem there, but should I be nervous about breaking a spring again?

Anyone else have this problem?

thats why im a big framelock fan :)

isnt there 2 springs in there? maybe another knife/maker. but i thought there were 2 redundant springs...

I only opened it enough to see the one broken spring, but the blade was so loose that it seemed that the other spring was either loose or broken.

I'm also a fan of frame locks and liner locks but I also like seeing all the new ideas out there. Sometimes they're good and sometimes not so good.

A sharp knife is a happy knife.

There's no spring that has anything to do with the tightness of the blade. The spring allows the Axis lock to engage. When you pull back on the Axis lock, the blade is free to pivot. If it's too loose for you, tighten the pivot to your taste.

The mini grips are one of the most popular knives around and extremely durable. The 555 that you have is my favorite. I much prefer the blade over the more popular 556.

I hope you don't have trouble again, but if you do, you've got a warranty with a good company.

You're right, but with no spring tension on the lock, there's nothing to hold the blade open or closed so it just flops around.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the knife and when I get it back it'll go back to being my EDC. I just started this thread to find out whether or not this is a common problem.

Hye Mark, every nowa nd then a thread like this pops up at bladeforums, but its a rare occasion...thats the only problem people have had with any of the grips, its the spring on the axis lock breaking...there is a spring on each side of it so they will just pop one out and popa new one in and your good to go, I have a vid on how the axis lock works, take a look...

I cant promise anythgin but there is a really good chance that will not happen to you again...

Got a pretty good selections of Grips, and haven't had a spring break yet. Happens, but as started, it is rare.

Enjoy!

Well the Mini Grip came back and it's back in the EDC rotation along with a Mcusta MC-72D and a Benchmite.

Great service!

Glad you received it back. Some months ago, I sent one in that had a cracked scale. Never received it back... :(

This is the first I've heard of spring breaking, I don't think it is a wide-spread problem. I've had my first BM Mini-Grip for 4 or 5 years IIRC still works great, and I've had my 2nd one for about a year now, no problems with it either. Sounds like BM's good CS department came through for you.

The Minis are for women and little boys. Get a tough one... Buy a Rukus!

LOL, and the full size 610 please

j/k (for the record, i EDC a girlie Boker Hyper w/ < 3" blade :sick2: )

back to the topic, with only 1 spring left, does the axis lock be able to lock the blade in place securely?

i read about the axis lock spring broken like that, and you can always jam in the space right behind the stud to "lock" the blade in place in when the spring breaks and you need the blade to "work"

Rukus has a 4.3" blade.

Beware: California knife laws do not permit folding blades with blade lengths longer than 4 inches...so it's illegal to carry around a Rukus. I bought a mini-Rukus for this reason.

really? i always thought CA has no limit on length (folding), but auto and switchblade are illegal

autos are legal in CA if 2 inches or under I believe. Doesn't micretec have some california models that are their standards with the very short blades?

CA has no size restrictions on folders, although local laws may differ.
