I have gone through the thread
Human Night Vision Preservation

But finding LEDs with a wavelength greater then 620nm or specific reviews on them is proving difficult.

I am doing research into building a navigation light for use by a copilot in a rally car. I am trying to build with the following function. Usable by copilot while doing night stages, bright enough to read navigation but not too bright as to distract the driver. On a flexible arm, and possibly have a brightness adjuster perhaps by a variable resistor. LED not required if a suitable incandescent could be found.

Any advice on which lights can produce a usable red light for this purpose ?

If the driver has his headlights on then he won't have night vision and neither will the co-pilot if he ever glances up at the lit up road. So I think you can use any lighting source you want as long as it is not too bright.

So a regular red LED or a warm-white LED (to avoid too much blue) might work fine.

Cheers - Greg (never been in a rally car)

True,
I suppose retaining nightvision for either of them is not a big deal. Just having a light to read navigation that is not bright enough to distract the driver. Any red led should do. As the driver cannot really see the copilot and what they are doing, vision is pretty limited to straight ahead with a helmet, hans device and a chair that cups the sides of the helmet :D

I don't have a specific product in mind, but the requirements seem quite reasonable. I think almost any small red or white light mounted on a gooseneck that plugs into a lighter outlet would work for you, perhaps with a little modification. Samples:
