wondering if it will work well with primary AA's (ill get some rechargables later)

I have done it with a 8aa to 2d with nimh with no problems,I really dont see a problem with it.I am sure somebody else will chime in with more info but I think those bulbs r only 2.69 so if you do instaflash it wont hurt to bad.

I had no problems with 6 NiMH, but no experience running with 6 alkalines. I might give it a try tonight if I have time. I'm pretty sure it would work fine -- and worst case the 5 cell Krypton or 6 cell Xenon would both still be pretty bright.

If it survived the previous posters 8xNiMH then 6 alkalines should be no problem.

i assume its better to run the 5 cell light to over drive it then use the 6 cell light?

i mean if i run 6 1.5v cells thats 9v for a magbulb that was supposed to be 7.5v

The 5 cell Mag-Num Star bulb is actually rated for 6V and is overdriven at the 7.2-7.5 operating range which is consistent with other flashlight bulb applications that generally overdrive the bulb a bit. Previous posts on this forum regarding the use of a 5 cell Xenon bulb with alkaline batteries seem to consistently report bulb failures when it is used with alkaline batteries. If you can't afford to use NiMH batteries right now, you might be better served using one of the Mag 5 cell Krypton bulbs or a KPR 112 bulb with alkaline batteries, which is a bit more forgiving to overdriving. If you want to use a Xenon bulb, you'll probably be better off using the 6 cell Mag-Num Star bulb for the time being (run time should be a bit over an hour using alkaline batteries.)

I run this bulb in a 2c setup using 3 primary CR123 Lithium cells (over 9V fresh). Never instaflashed and lasts several sets of batteries. Nice white bright output overdriven like this.

The Krypton bulb take a voltage beating much better than the Xenon...plus they are cheaper!

Well, if 3 primary lithiums at 9 volts cannot blow the 5 cell Magnum star, then I highly doubt alkalines will be able to. Alkalines suffer under large current draw conditions, which causes a voltage sag, below 9volts. Coupled with losses within the body and switchgear, the bulb should be fine.
