Caps for Fenix Bodies... Anyone work with silicone?

Hey guys...

I sent Fenix-store an email about stocking some kind of battery cap for there bodies. I have a P3Dce and a L2D body (compact or extreme runtime), but it would be great to carry the extra body with the batteries installed. It would also stop the ingress of foreign objects into the body that is not in use.

Still no reply though.

I think we can come up with an idea for a threaded cap either plastic or alloy.

If I'm using the L1D, I put 2 batteries in my L2D body with tailcap, and just slide it into the holster, batteries first. Holds them in nicely. Only thing is, I don't have a holser for my P2D body and tailcap - so I need to order another holster for that one (since when I have the head on the L1D body, I want to be able to keep that in a holster too.)

But I'm sure we can figure out a size for the head and find one from some household product or something. It'll be funny, walk through Wal-Mart looking for some type of container with the same size cap as the battery tube.

I've seen lots of rubber and latex boots that go over switches and terminals. I use some to keep spare AAA batteries for my PDA from rattling. They come in ALL sizes. Sorry, don't have a good URL.

Caps made specifically for this purpose may be more stylish, but I think my idea works really well, and looks pretty good also. I use caps from various pump spray bottles in my wifes vanity cabinet. They come in very handy for both being able to just leave the batteries in the bodies, and some of them make great diffusers. It is pretty easy to find ones the right size for this use. The ones I use screw on the threads perfectly for a nice tight and secure fit.

Those caps look really handy--but I'm not sure I want a wife again just to get some diffuser/caps.
I've used the translucent 35mm film containers for diffusers, and the Advantix (?) film canisters store 2 CR123A's really well.

Don't laugh but Aunt Jemima syrup top fits perfectly on my P1D-ce.

Someone else posted something about finding things around the house to use as covers/protectors and I found several.

I think it might have been you Bonder006 --- if so thanks !

I will go to my local machining shop and see if getting them made is a viable option. I'm thinking of doing about 20 of these to start with. I think stainless steel would be ideal, that way I don't have to get them painted or anodized.

What do you guys think?

Wouldn't plastic or something non-conductive be a better solution? With a metal cap, wouldn't there be a chance of battery discharge or possibly a short?

I concur - plastic only. But something which screws down on the head would be better then something which just snaps on. Considering the threads for the LxD/P2D/P3D are all the same - it should be easy to have plenty made up and ofered for sale.

Good point...

Plastic... Not sure where to start in getting someone to make these up for us?

I would like it to be made of metal but you are right about the risks, would these risks be minimized or removed altogether with the inclusion of a non-conductive material in the cap? Not sure what to use though?

Keep the ideas coming...

An idea: If you machine a metal endcap, place a piece of foam into the end. The foam will stop the negative/positive end of the battery making contact.

Well, instead of foam which could break down - a strong plastic disc which snaps in.

What about a modified scope filter? (can't find a pic)

Essentially two caps (film canisters, medicine bottles) bound together by some light/thin bungie or elastic. You could make it dual purpose and also use one of the caps as a diffuser or color filter.

Re: Caps for Fenix Bodies... Would you buy one?

Thanks for your input everyone.

I understand there may only be a handful of us with a single head and multiple bodies and/or like the HDS solution, may just want to carry a spare battery in a Fenix body.

I guess what I'm saying is what would you pay for something like a metal end cap? $8 too much - maybe $12

I would still like to entertain the idea of some kind of pressure fitted silicone cap that could be made in any color we like. To act as a body cap/battery protector and as a color filter. Just think how good a red or green cap would be?

Keep the ideas coming because you have all helped.

I posted previously an entire thread about Fenix accessories being out of line, price wise...I think that $17 is too much for a Fenix spare body - so I definitely think that $8-$12 is too much for a metal end cap. This is how I store extra batteries for my Fenix lights now.

Cheap, effective, and provides another benefit of protecting the body itself from damage. Those are Eneloops sticking out of the body there, I slid the body up a bit to show you there were batteries in there. I'm carrying the P2D light at the moment - but those holsters carry my extra batteries in case I need them.
