Does the coleman 3 x AAA at walmart fit the 18650 battery?

Both the positive and negative contacts for the battery carrier are on the top of the carrier. Also, the switch is attached directly to the base of the carrier in a manner which requires everything to be screwed down and under pressure to work.

It can be done, but it's not as easy as you might think. You would have to gut the existing carrier.
