Which emitter is better for a aspherical Maglite? A Cree R2 or a SSC P4?
I want a really tight spot using the KD aspherical lens for D Maglite.

Cree. It has narrower beam so more light would go to the lens.

I have tried a R2 in a Surefire 6P and it works perfectly with an aspheric
Maglite + Malkoff P4 dropin does not lend itself very well with an aspheric
lens. Once you focus the lens correctly and get a good sharp projection
of the emitter you will also see in the projected image two dark wires
(dont know the techie term  ).
You will not get these with a R2 or Q5, which is how I run my aspherics

Rayman .... building your first aspheric Mag ???
I have been messing about with them as well :D
To save you from searching the forums, here are a few things I found out.
You do not need a reflector if you are using a aspheric lens, this is what
happens if you do

This photo was a little experiment I tried with a Novatac which has a Seoul
emitter and OP reflector. Notice the side spill .... the wavy light rings, not
very nice.
The photo does not show the projected emitter very well either, but I could
not get an image of the die, just a hotspot with the two wires I mentioned
earlier.

Heres a photo of a Cree Q5 on a Mag

The projected image is nice a defined, the photo does not show it but the
die is clearly visible.

The key to getting a nice square projection, is to get the aspheric lens
in focus. The Mag itself does give you some degree of focusing by turning
the head but sometimes this may not be enough. So this may mean
moving the emitter itself, either further back into the Mag or further
forward towards the lens. You can do this easily with a Mag dropin.

Heres another aspheric Mag I have been working on

Thank you very much tx101 :D.

You are right it's my first aspherical mod. I had two HAIII heatsink for a P7 lying around, so I thought I could use this one. Do you think I can get a good focus with this?

If your using the KD aspheric lens, the distance between the emitter
and the lens has to be 37mm

EDIT ... just double checked .... the correct distance is 34mm NOT 37mm

Heres a photo of my Q5 Mag

This gives me a focused projection and lets me screw the head all the way
down with one full turn left

I'm trying to order KD M*g CREE Q5 LED Drop-in &52mm MLC Aspherical Lens Kit SKU: S004465 from KD but I can't get past the log in page. Can anyone help me? Is there any discounts for CPF members?

With the H22A heatsink the R2 would have the same position in the Maglite. But thanks for the checking.
