Custom 123 battery spacer?

How do you guys make spacers. I'm trying to run a rechargeable light on two 123 primarys. I need to build a spacer about 1 3/4 inches long.

The easiest way might be to run a correct-length bolt through a piece of thick-walled rubber tubing of the correct diameter (friction fit). A nicer solution would be a hardwood dowel, drilled in the center for running a bolt through, then retained on the other side with a small nut to approximate the + nipple.
