I just got some from 4Sevens. Is it a good idea to use Deoxit Gold on new batteries? I did not do it yet before seeking advise. If its a go, should I use the Gold on both positive & negative terminals of the battery? The batteries are primaries AA & AAA. Thanks!

I don't know if it's a good idea or not but I do it all the time. I usually clean the flashlight terminals with the red stuff then put the gold on the battery so that it is applied to the battery and the points where the battery touches the flashlight parts.

It is perfectly fine to use Deoxit and/or Deoxit Gold on new or used batteries and battery holder contacts as often as you wish.

If you didn't know, you are supposed to wipe off both products with a dry clean cloth after application. It says that in the directions and on their website.

Well, "is it ok" and "is it a good idea" are two different questions... "it's ok" to me means that the treatment won't do any harm. But the stuff is expensive so "it's a good idea" means that using it on brand new batteries has benefits that are worth it. ;)

I have been smearing it on my lights slightly wet without wiping off the excess with no adverse effects...so far. I do let it dry 10 minutes though. That goes for the battery contacts as well.

That's what most people do, and it is not the correct way to use it. Some people smoke while filling their car's gas tank. So if you make that comment like it is a perfectly fine way to use Deoxit/Gold, you are incorrect.

The product has clear instructions on proper use that CAIG engineers worked out and specified. I suspect that people have the mistaken belief that leaving a layer of liquid somehow is giving a bridge to enhance electrical conduction.

Lux is right. I wipe off the excess after leaving it for 3-5 minutes when using it on contact thread. I use Q-tip to apply on battery terminals.

From Caig website: "These products are initially non-conductive liquids, when subjected to an electrical field,DeoxIT® and DeoxIT® GOLD promote current flow. No short circuits will occur."
same as lubrication, excessive/over application will only attract dirts. :D

Could I use another cleaner (say, CRC Lectra Clean or other contact cleaner) before using DeoxIT, or is their cleaner better? not needed?

I found that my Novatac is very finicky and contact cleaner solves about 70% of the problems with contacts that I am having (spray it in there, rinse, repeat etc) but find the contacts get dirty all by themselves very quickly.

Is DeoxIT a possible solution?

(sorry for possible hijack)

I'm sure there are other quality contacts cleaners, but CAIG's Deoxit and Deoxit Gold are the "Gold Standard" (so to speak). It is the best that I have heard of.
