I have purchased a Dive Rite 10W HID canister light. The original battery is dead. I need to purchase a new one. Divegearexpress sells them for $169.00 http://www.divegearexpress.com/lights/batteries.shtml

This just seems like too much to spend on a light worth only $250-$300.

Can anyone help with a different replacement battery? Batteryspace sells this one, but they will be out of stock for awhile: http://www.batteryspace.com/nimhbatterypack12v4500mah50wh10x43affordiydivinglighthidhalogen.aspx

They sell other batteries for DIY dive lights, but I am battery ignorant and don't know what is acceptable. http://www.batteryspace.com/12vnimhbatterypacks.aspx

Thank you for any help!

There are probably a few options BUT first we need to know what type of battery it had originally.
The 10W HID ballasts run a very narrow input range and as such a 11.1v nominal Li Ion pack may be unsuitable if it used a 12V NiMh pack.

If you can access the ballast the input voltage may be printed on it or can be figured out by the ballast model number.

Here is the specs: http://www.diverite.com/products/catalog/retired/lt6250mr11-ss

Says it had this: 12V 4500 mA NiMH battery

You could try
http://www.batteryjunction.com/

But they are not taking orders till the end of the month.

Sorry, probably not all that helpful.

You are pretty much stuck with a 12V NiMh pack unless you change the ballast.
You could make up your own pack or you could buy the more expensive pack or you could just wait for the other to come back in stock.

I just talked to my battery builder and he said he can get packs built like that for $68+ shipping. I asked about the $45 and he said he could not do that price. He said he would need prepayment and 4-5 days to get it to you.

Any 12v battery that you can stuff into your canister should be fine... Input voltage for that ballast is probably 10-16 volts so also 3s LiIon should work. COuld do something like a 3s/2p 11.1v about 4,000 mah with the right battery.
Thanks

When I was looking at building a light I checked with a local store called Batteries Plus. The guy was beating batteryspace.com prices and no shipping (but tax of course). Also said if I had any issues I could come in and he would fix it. Here is the batteriesplus website http://www.batteriesplus.com/

If they have a store near you I would check their price.

Thank you, that battery seems pretty reasonable. I might have to go with that. But if you say any 12v NIMH would work, batteryspace might have something that will work. Thank you very much.

I don't recommend the use of any 12V like the lead battery, I have here the ballast of that light and it is 12.8-13.2V, the pack uses 10 NiMh batteries.

If it says 12.8-13.2, then I would use that!

Not in my experience with 10W ballasts. They all have very narrow voltage ranges to suit the types of batteries they are to be used with.
EG 12v SLA, 10 X 1.2v NiCD/NiMh and 3 X Li Ion 3.7v.

I think this is because they are not a regulated ballast.

Right, I was thinking about my brightstar 12W ballast. On that one I can feed anything from 10-16 volts.

I have not seen a BS 10w HID. All the ones I have worked with have been WA's.

Sounds like the BS has a regulated ballast. What light is it out of? Or have you brought it as a bare unit?

Hi Hector

My canister is from DR Slimline H1000. I have the conversion ready maglite with XML (I ordered from you 2 lences 1 month ago)
The DR battery is this DR-LT6326 http://www.divegearexpress.com/lights/batteries.shtml

The afermarket suitable battery is this http://www.batteryspace.com/nimhbatterypack12v4500mah50wh10x43affordiydivinglighthidhalogen.aspx

12V 4.5A 10 batteries 1.2NiMh 4/3AF 4.5Ah

I found a coustom pack in a local store 12V 3.8Ah for 50€ (65$) but i don't like the quality of the pack (no thermistor, no polyswitch, no heatshrink)

Thanks
Dimitris
