I have 2@ of the original KL1 heads which had Luxeon 1 emitters set at about 350 ma. One has been modded with a higher binned Lux 1 and reset to about 500 ma.

I had nailbender mod my 2@ original KL4s with 3-level 1.4 A XP-Gs which work very well. Dave looked inside one of the KL1s and observed that the available heat sinking was minimal and whatever mods he was geared up for would be considerably dimmer than the KL4s.

Any ideas?

If you get a K2 TFFC from photonphanatic those are cool, but the tint is really nice and warm.

At 1.4A those K2 TFFC's can handle being hot better then the XP-G anyday. Plus the optic is aready designed around the luxeon so you are good to go.

You could also drive the K2 at 1A and get 200 OTF lumens inspite of the lack of heatsinking.

Hi there,

I've got a KL1 mod discussion currently running in this thread here in the /LED subforum if you might be interested?

Also, some threads I bookmarked while I was researching mine. They are mostly outdated by now but might still have some interesting info?

At any rate, I am also considering an emitter replacement for my KL1, so please report back with any results, I would find it most helpful.

I just added to Kestrel's KL1 mod thread one of my old MC-E mods into a ribbed KL1 head.

Feel free to PM me with any questions on the mod.

What does the ribbed lens do to the beam? Make it more flood or pull it in for more throw?
Minnesota ey? I spent 24 years in the twin cities, fun place.

The ribbed optic just happened to be the one I had around. It is a Carclo optic that I ordered from LEDsupply Over all it was a very floody mod making it fun but not very useful for illumination over 50 feet. This is why I want to make another one using XP-Gs :D
