Hi !

This thread is here for your pleasure /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif to post comments and suggestions about the new Aleph-FAQ.
Please point out errors or misinformation, too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif and tell me what you would like to see in this FAQ in addition to the contents that it has now ...

Thanx!

bernhard

Wow looks like you covered everything pertaining to the Aleph. Good Job. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif

Great work!!!

Some suggestions:
-I think most newbies' difficulty is in selecting the driver and resistor for a given battery and LED. I think most folks have a sense of the battery configuration and LED they want, so we can work within these parameters.
-3w 1x123
-3w 2x123
-5w 2x123

-For the driver, the primary constraint is runtime, so one way to present it would be to characterise them as follows, using 3w 2x123 as an example (runtimes are approx because I'm not an expert). Another thing you could add is approximate throw in country darkness. We all know you have to operate with the caveat that every emitter is different, but it should give people some sense:
-Scorcher: DB917, 1 hr runtime, throws 400 feet
-Reasonable balance: DB700, 2 hr runtime, throws 300 feet
-Marathon runner: DB500, X hr runtime, throws 150 feet

Resistors:
-xohm, Arc AAA brightness/lumens, x hr runtime
-yohm, 1/2 Arc AAA brightness, x hr runtime
-zohm, .....

Having pre-designed packages using standard references that most folks can relate to would help a great deal I think.

Just my friendly suggestion.

Great job, Bernhard! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
How about some outdoor beamshots? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Awesome job /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif It's my great pleasure to be able to help you with my site.

I'd probably go also with suggestions on the current required for various applications - or at least beamshots to show how much brighter a given level is, but what you give up in return. Maybe someone could put together a chart showing runtime versus lumens between the various current-levels in a given sandwich type? BB500 versus 750 versus 833, NG 500 versus 750 versus 1000, sorta like the one you've already got with the Li-Ion comments?

Also, more beamshots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You might want to add TylerDurden's Build notes and walkthrough for aleph LE's Here

It's very nice and comprehensive.

Thanx so far guys ...

... will include tyler's notes this evening.

... about the driver choices ... I knew this was difficult and I'll try to come up with something

... beamshots ... as soon as time permits.

 Bernhard,
Well for starters /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wow.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/goodjob.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanks.gif. This is a great idea and I commend you for it. I'm sure this will help Don and give him more of his much needed bench time. This thread will help all of us not just the newbies it will be an invaluable resource as more members add their own expertise. I for one am not far removed from being a newbie and will welcome this wealth of information. I have spent many an hour trying to find relevant info. for a build, but with this thread help is just a click away.
Being the proud owner of an Aleph 1 & 2 I'm sure I will use this new thread in my next decision on how to do my next great Aleph light tool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I think that I might even build the head myself.
So Bernhard keep up the good work you deserve a lot of Kudos, Kudos, Kudos /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif.
Also to all the other contributors who have posted information, THANK YOU!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/goodjob.gif
Keep-em bright in the night

Question on finishes:
The Shoppe offers Aleph parts in Natural or Black, should we understand that Black corresponds to Dark Slate Grey?
The FAQ states that there is only one finish.

yes, black equals dark slate grey. this is a very dark grey, and some call it black.
to my knowledge only the 1x123 body and the tailcap are available in HAIII-NAT on a regular basis, all the other offers are short-term only.

I just received an e-mail from a owner who noticed some hair line scratches in the interior of the bezel ring on his light. My bad for not commenting earlier that these parts are anodized on racks and there are imperfections as well as some cases where the anodize does not cover where the rack held the part. This is especially true of the bezel rings.

There is nothing perfect or even close to perfection in these lights; starting from the design and following through with the execution and assembly. Obvious flaws or imperfections in appearance will hopefully be caught and removed from pieces used and sold. I am sorry about this and I can't and won't hold these lights to an appearance standard that would preclude this series from being offered.

My attitude and philosophy is that these lights are first and foremost tools. The anodizing is there as a means to protect the Al from an accelerated abbrasion and wearing. I can't speak for the other modders who are building with these components and selling them. I can only speak for myself. If I sell you a light and you are not happy with it, I will not play hard ball and force you to keep something you don't want. I will take it back and refund your payment. If I feel that such a policy is getting abused, I will either change it or more likely just stop selling the lights here.

A big thanks to Bernhard! So nice to have a compilation of the information all in one place.
