Magnets and flashlights can be fun until that moment when I forget that the body is aluminum ( normally i attach to the clip which is steel) and it falls on my foot when I try to hang it from the railings

A magnet will only influence or create a current when it is moving in relation to an object: that is called induction. Maybe the magnet pulls on the battery, making a better contact? I definitely have to try it for myself when I get a chance...
